Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCG-12BC Grind Central Coffee Grinder

Customer Review: Died in two days
Summary: 1 Stars

My husband received this as one of his Christmas presents. He was quite happy with it, and I was fine with it, too, since it didn't make as much noise as the old Melita he had been using. The third time he used it, though, it just died in the middle of the grind. That was it. Dead. Called Cuisinart, and they helpfully suggested that we return the item to the store (we don't have the receipt) or send it to Cuisinart where we have to pay for shipping both ways. We have a bunch of Cuisinart items around the house, but we won't be getting any more. I'm done with this brand. And I'll definitely recommend against buying this coffee grinder to anyone who asks.

Update: Husband convinced me to get the grinder replaced at the store because he liked the fact that it grinds fairly quietly. The replacement worked for all of 5 seconds. It ran, then almost immediately died. So that's it. I'm returning it for good. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT! REALLY REALLY BAD!

Customer Review: Enjoyin' my new grinder
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought this style with the silver retro look as it perfectly matches my Cuisinart coffee maker. The grinder is cute and small, doesn't take up much cabinet space at all! I am happy with my purchase. Giving it a 4 star as I don't understand why plastic lid which fits the grinder cup (and is intended for storage of coffee) couldn't have been made smaller so it could snap on the top and sit under the plastic dome top and on top of the grinder for storage of coffee for the next day.

To store the coffee, you have to take the cup out and then snap lid on and leave it sitting outside the grinder. So for that reason I give it 4 stars, a bit of a design flaw; the plastic lid is worthless to me and I'll probably never use it. Secondly, the cord isn't easy to push underneath the grinder for storing and hiding it. That doesn't bother me so much but it may bother others.

Other than these two notations, I am grinding beans daily and enjoying it!

Customer Review: I like it ..
Summary: 4 Stars

I've owned a lot of different coffee grinders over the years, this one I bought to replace a still functioning Krups burr grinder. With just about any blade grinder you have the problem of the grind not being even. I owned a couple of Braun blade grinders and I got in the habit of shaking the coffee grinder while grinding to keep the beans moving and I always got a pretty even grind. I do the same with the Cuisinart and the grind comes out pretty even. Sounds like a pain, but once you're in the habit of doing it it becomes second nature. It's relatively quiet and the best part is that there's not a lot of static in the stainless steel basket so the coffee doesn't cling and make a mess when you open the grinder. It takes about 35 seconds to grind a full hopper of beans to a medium fine grind. So far I have no regrets over buying this grinder. It feels sturdy and powerful, but only time will tell the tale of reliability. I'm pretty satisfied with this grinder so far.

Customer Review: Yuck, terrible experience!
Summary: 1 Stars

When my old Braun (12 years+) developed a rip in the wire. I thought it time to replace it for safety reasons. I purchased the Cuisinart as I thought the design was smart and the brand was reliable in my experience (I have one of their coffeemakers and their food processor). Well let me tell you how wrong I was about this grinder. The first one developed a two inch crack in the plastic cover after ONE use. I realize that sometimes products can be lemons and do not like to submit bad reviews on DOA products so was willing to try another. Well on the second one, the stainless bowl (it holds the beans and grinder blade) got stuck on the grinder and would not come off. The ability to remove this bowl and put it in the dishwasher is the big selling point to this, but if that is broken? Back to the store for this lousy product. It did not grind well either, big chunks among powder. Stay away! I'm trying the Kitchenaid. Will review that when ready.

Customer Review: Looks aren't everything...
Summary: 2 Stars

For the love of God, do not buy this grinder! It is the messiest coffee grinder I've ever used, and it never grinds the beans evenly.

The system builds some kind of electrical charge that results in a holy mess--imagine opening the cover only to have powdered coffee explode all over your clothes, countertop and floor. This seems to be the rule rather than the exception. I could probably handle this on a weekly basis (i.e., grind a week's worth of coffee every Sunday evening when I have the time and energy to clean up pulverized beans), but it's really not worth the trouble since the "grinds" range in size between a fine Turkish powder and whole bean. No kidding.

That said, I give the grinder two stars for the slick brushed steel and black exterior that goes nicely with my coffee pot. After I replace the unit (today), I'll probably cut off the cord and use it as a bookend for my recipe collection.
