Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-450BK 4-Cup Coffeemaker with Stainless-Steel Carafe, BlackCustomer Review: nice product - does what it should do Summary: 4 Stars
In my house, it is just my wife and myself. She does not drink coffee, so I do not have a need for a large coffeemaker. Oftentimes, I break the glass carafe because I am a klutz - so I often buy a new coffeemaker every few years. I wanted to end that habit by getting a carafe that is not glass. So I purchased this coffeemaker, which after a few weeks of use, has done well.
I saw other reviews that complained about how the coffee sometimes drips out when pouring. This is my third 4 cup coffeemaker (I previously had a Mr. Coffee brand maker, and a Black and Decker coffeemaker.) Each one had the same problem. I think it is just a design flaw for having such a small carafe.
As far as the coffee, the coffee has a good taste (I saw that some of the reviews talked about a plastic aftertaste.) I did not find that. I also purchased the re-usable golden filter and I find that at the bottom of the cup, there are small grounds. I find that different from the other similar coffeemakers that I have had over the years, but I don't find my coffee bitter or bad tasting.
I also found that some of the reviews talked about the fact that the pot does not keep the coffee warm. The pot is not insulated - just as the glass ones are not insulated. The pot is not supposed to keep the coffee warm - the warmer does that and it does that well.
Overall, I am happy with product and as long as you know what you are getting, it does a find job of making coffee. I would recommend this product.
Customer Review: Use it right and it works great Summary: 4 Stars
The DCC-450 is a reliable and consistent basic coffeemaker that works well as long as you use it just right. It is similar to the coffeemakers one finds in hotel rooms and is solidly built at least as far as coffeemakers go. It makes a little more than four six ounce "cups" at a time and completes the brewing process in a few minutes. The coffee is hot and stays hot in the carafe, but cools fast once the internal auto shutoff timer triggers. Add the reusable Cuisinart GTF-4 Gold Tone Filter for Cuisinart 4-cup Coffeemakers for a decent everyday set-up. A better carafe design and a more generous delay before the heating unit shut off would have bumped my review up to five stars.
Pros:
+ Fast brewing.
+ Stainless steel carafe that can take a beating without pause.
+ Heating unit auto-shutoff. No worries about scalded pots.
Cons:
+ Heating unit auto-shutoff. Yeah, it's a con too--the shutoff comes too quickly.
+ Awkward carafe design: the plastic rim doesn't easily allow complete emptying of the pot and the spout requires slow pouring or else the coffee drips all over.
+ Short power cord length.
+ Doesn't include reusable filter (although the Cuisinart GTF-4 Gold Tone Filter for Cuisinart 4-cup Coffeemakers works great).
Customer Review: leaky spout Summary: 3 Stars
Just bought this from a brick and mortar store yesterday, to replace my broken premium Keurig coffee maker.
If I pour the coffee quickly, the stainless steel carafe dribbles coffee down it's chin. The workaround is to pour fairly slowly, but this is annoying. Cuisinart should have caught the problem and resolved it by now. :(.
Just updated my rating from 5 stars to 3 stars as a result.. It's not annoying enough for me to return it, but it's annoying..
I like the auto-shutoff since I don't like the taste of burning coffee :) and I don't need to worry about accidentally leaving it on..
With paper filters, the coffee tastes pretty good. Thought about getting a permanent filter, but upon doing some research it sounds like it may not be good for your cholesterol, to use permanent filters. Anyways, my past experience with permanent gold filters is that the resulting coffee tends to be markedly bitter and has extra sludge in it, from the fine coffee grounds that make it through the filter.
Cleanup is a breeze -- toss out the paper filter and rinse out the stainless steel pot.
Due to the stainless pot, you can't see when it's finished brewing but I just set a 10 minute timer and it finishes by then. And I think I prefer the stainless pot -- no risk of breakage due to drops or overheating..
Customer Review: 4cup Cuisinart Coffee Maker Model DCC450 Summary: 1 Stars
Since I have owned an 8-10 cup Cuisinart Coffee Maker for the past four years and which has never failed to make an excellent cup of coffee, I thought I couldn't go wrong with this 4 cup model and purchased one last year. First of all I was surprised at how hot the carafe becomes--it is not insulated. Secondly, and most importantly, we noticed that the coffee had a very unpleasant taste of plastic. (Has anyone else experienced this?). As a result, I returned it and only recently decided to give this Cuisinart product another try. Sadly, I had to return it as well for the same reasons. The hot carafe I could live with, but a plastic taste in my coffee was definitely not acceptable--it was very noticeable. After I returned this latest coffee maker, I contacted the Cuisinart Customer Service via email and was advised to run a water/vinegar solution through the first time and water only on the second try. As a rule, I always run water through my coffee makers at least twice before making my first pot of coffee, but the water only solution did not alleviate the strong taste of plastic, so I cannot comment on the efficacy of the vinegar/water solution. I have read the reviews on this product and did not notice any other complaints of a plastic taste in the coffee, which I find strange. Could I have purchased two similarly defective products several months apart?
Customer Review: A terrible coffee pot - save yourself some money and get a cheaper one Summary: 1 Stars
I have owned and used this coffee pot for 3 years and it has never been worth the price. The biggest problems with this coffee pot are as follows:
1: Lets start with the obvious problem. The carafe design is highly flawed. When you pour coffee, a decent amount will always pour down the side of the coffee pot. You will have to pour the coffee over the sink. This carafe has a terrible design and should have been recalled.
2: The on/off switch is actually a "brew" switch because you press it in and it snaps back onto the off position. What happens next is that the coffee will brew and when it's done the pot shuts off, this means that the coffee gets cold quickly. If something comes up and you don't get to your coffee right away, get ready to use the microwave.
3: If you don't do everything exactly right, the coffee pot will overflow out of the filter onto your counter. Not only do you get no coffee to drink, you get a huge mess to clean up. This has happened to me two or three times a year in the three years I've owned it.
I have finally purchased a new coffee pot and am going to deposit this one into the trash can. I would not recommend anyone buy this. Do yourself a favor and buy a cheaper coffee pot.
