Customer Review: Cuisine Art, indeed.

I very much enjoy a hot cup of coffee in the morning and I can definitely tell the difference between good coffee and a sub-par cup of Joe. I also enjoy shopping on Amazon. I'm assuming if you're reading this, we share those traits in common. So, if you're looking at this coffee maker, here's a realistic, no-frills review for you; my thoughts as I opened and used this item as a consumer:
The item is packaged nicely in an attractive, sturdy box. Upon pulling the coffee maker from the box, I immediately noticed its weight. It's heavy - in a good way. I placed it on my counter and I was immediately impressed. It's a handsome machine; the stainless steel seems to be of good quality, not thin or artificial. The unit sits flat and stable, no wobble at all. The unit's heft helps keep it planted. So far, so good. It's very attractive and seems to be of fine quality. At this point, I'm not regretting the $90 price tag.
After the glitter of a new kitchen appliance wore off a bit, I decided to make a pot of coffee. The filler door is substantial and feels good to open and close. However, here's where the experience started going a bit south for me. The area to pour your water in is in the back (as usual), however, because the lid's hinged at the back, it's slightly awkward to fill, especially as you try to pour the last of your water in. Not a deal breaker, but irritating.
Then, all at once, everything negative about the maker started poking me in the forehead. This coffee maker has almost no features. Sure, I know coffee purists will probably balk: "what features do you need? It makes good coffee, that's all you need!" I can hear it now. Well, here's my take on that... I had a mister coffee that made good coffee and it was $7.00, no joke. Yes, it was a piece of garbage but you know what? It made damn good coffee. No features. Good coffee. Seven dollars. I've had really good coffee makers as well, so let's not throw my credibility out the window for seven bucks.
So why is this unit more expensive? It's not because of the brewing, no matter what anyone tells you. It's the same pump and drip configuration that 99% of coffee makers out there share. After tasting a good, but not magical, cup of coffee, I started to realize that I had just paid nearly 100 bucks for stainless steel. The LCD screen doesn't light up and it's tiny. If it's even moderately dim in the kitchen, good luck. The controls are simple yet at the same time, and it might just be me, counterintuitive. I'm not saying you'll need Stephen Hawking to come explain it to you, but I opted to read the manual and for me, that says a lot. I was irritated by the controls, especially since they're not controlling much.
All in all, it's a good unit. It makes coffee well, the capacity is good. It's built well and it's very attractive. It happens to be that that's exactly what you're paying for here. Good looks and good initial quality. I don't know if this will last, but it seems like it should be ok. As far as the coffee itself goes, don't think you're going to get a better cup of coffee from this than you would a unit in the 30-50 dollar range, or even seven dollar range, because you're not. It's functional eye candy, but definitely not a super star.
