Customer Review: Just Adequate coffeemaker

I have used this coffeemaker for six months after reluctantly giving up my Black & Decker spacemaker model (not being made any more). At $83 plus more for shipping, this is just an okay price; you can do better through Costco even though you have to pay tax. Generally, this coffeemaker is overkill unless there are two or more caffeine addicts in the house. My husband and I will drain the pot daily. At 5'3" I cannot see the water level, but we figured out the correct amount of water to use. We fill it with a 4 cup (with alternate metric markings) Pyrex measuring cup; it actually takes 2 liters for 14 cups plus two scoops of coffee. The major disappointment for me with this coffeemaker is that the pause feature doesn't completely shut off the flow of coffee; it drips several drops while you are pouring yourself a cup, unlike Black & Decker models, which never, ever drip during brewing. This is a design flaw, pure and simple. Also, the coffeemaker makes quite a bit of noise while brewing. Postscript: I forgot to mention that the plastic lid is difficult to place on the glass caraffe; you have to get it just right without forcing it on. The only reason this item gets 3 stars is that it does make good coffee. I've had the Cuisinart DCC-2200 for about 2 years now and I must say that it does make great coffee. I roast my own coffee beans and use purified water for the best taste possible. I use ten "heaping" tablespoons of freshly ground coffee for the full pot. I've also found that if I push the 1-4-cup button, it takes longer to brew but makes stronger, smoother coffee.
The problems are:
- After every brew cycle, when you lift the lid to extract the used filter/grinds, the water that has condensed on the lid drips down the back and onto the counter top. This could have been prevented if Cuisinart had made a channel in the plastic lid that would route the water back into the reservoir but instead they drilled a hole that allows the water to dump right out the back. I've measured the water that drips out each time to be a little more than 2 tablespoons. Not a problem anymore since I bought a plastic tray for the maker to sit on.
- The clock is a joke - you need a flashlight to read it.
- Needs an adjustable warming plate - or do as I've done and buy a large Ikea carafe for about $[...]. It holds the entire pot less one large mug.
All in all a great looking coffee maker that makes excellent coffee with a few design problems.

My wife and I drink more coffee than we probably should. This Cuisinart coffee maker brews a full pot in just a few minutes. It taste great. I really like how easy it is to take everything apart and place the parts in my dishwasher. And the coffee pot does not spill water all over the place when filling the machine like so many other brands I've experienced in the past. Although I rated this coffee maker a 5-Star, there is one little thing I don't care for that much. The machine stays on for 2-hours before the auto shut-off shuts it off. Whereas most others turn off in one hour. But that is very minor. If you like perfect tasting coffee in a hurry, this machine is for you. If the size scares you, just to let you know, it fits perfectly under my upper cabinets when on the counter top. It is a little larger than the standard 12-cup machine, but not much. It looks real nice also. When I finally wear this coffee maker out, I'll buy another just like it. Oh, it takes the standard #4 Cone shaped filters, or you can use the copper filter it comes with. Purchased the dc-2200 machine. Only used on weekends but had it 4 years so 3 yr warr. ran out. Was in my kitchen when it almost caught fire! Called Cuisinart & they sent out the wrong item that they said they would send. They sent me this machine! We went out & bought the grind & brew cuzz we didn't want the same model. They sent me the same model so I called and even spoke with Clint (their superv.) He wouldn't exchange it for the grind & brew cuzz it was slightly more $! Couldn't believe it! I explained everything & he would not send the one that I was told I would be getting. Again, explained it almost burned my house down & you won't stand behind your product! He said "NO"! This company would rather not be out a few extra $ than to go to court on the matter which I fully intend on doing! Being a consumer I WOULD NOT buy from them. I'm so upset over this & sound very angry but feel I have a right to be! If you purchase a coffeemaker from them. This is a superb machine. Instructions are complete, easy to understand, and clear. And the coffee!!! Superb! I retired an old "Mr. Coffee" and decided to spend nearly $100 on this machine after reading some reviews. While I agree with most of the "negatives" I've found, I certainly don't consider them that bad. You can see the clock, but it should be a bit larger and lit. You can see the water level indicators, but it would help if these were represented on the outside of the machine, not the inside. Yes the water drips a bit from the lid if you open it during or just after the coffee finishes brewing...so don't open it so soon! Everything else is superb.
My old machine was really poor; it took over 2 HOURS to finish a twelve cup decanter!!!
This machine does a 14 cup decanter in exactly 12 minutes and 15 seconds - I timed it!

Higly recommend...would have given it a 4.9 out of 5 if that were possible!
