Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Brushed MetalCustomer Review: The beauty is short lived Summary: 2 Stars
We loved it while it worked, ultimately like most reviewers. Bought for the beauty and the name, it fill well into the rest of our "cuisinart" appliance filled kitchen. Unfortunately, the quality of this cusinart appliance is not up to par with the rest of their product line. Granted, we make 2 full pots of coffee a day, 7 days a week, but lesser machines have lasted longer. Ours lasted 11 months. My sister's machine lasted 13 months. My mother's lasted 16 months. All developed the same leaking issues and eventual permanent death of the clock/programming/on-off switch electricals. Being a notorious "instruction booklet reader," I can assure you that ours was operated under the letter of the law. Design flaws mentioned by many reviewers are ultimately to blame - Far too much plastic used on the interior, leading to poor seals, easily clogged dispenser leading to coffee on the counters, and a fill resevoir that even with the most careful filling will ultimately leak onto the electrical components if you are the least bit precise.
Let's face it - who's that precise at 5am, and even better, why should you have to be. Ease of use and functionality have to be on par with beauty. If the unit can not be made more "user friendly" and reliable, what good is it ultimately, aside from being the perfect visual complement to the rest of the cuisinart countertop appliances? This family has moved on to the Hamilton Beach brewmaster. For half the price it makes coffee. Dependably. What a novel concept.
For those wondering, no, I did not invoke the warranty, as I believe the definition of futility is doing the exact same thing the exact same way and expecting a different result. Until the unit is redesigned, consider your options.
Customer Review: Am I missing something? Summary: 3 Stars
Hi,
I am contemplating returning this item, but before I do I'm making an effort to solve my issues with it, for overall I like the design and concept. And I fear that to return it is going to involve hassle, as technically, the machine has been used, though not to my satisfaction.
1) None of the produt descriptions(Amazon or Cuisinart) mention the heating element. The description of the "Double-wall coffee reservoir" to me implied an insulated vessel which would keep brewed coffee hot. With the first "pot" that I brewed, without shutting off(thinking it was automatic), the coffee was taking on a burnt, bitter taste by the second cup (15 minutes). Trying again and shutting off after brewing, the coffee was noticably cooler in the same time frame. Is there something I am missing? I've read the instruction manual five or more times, and while it is somewhat vague, I'd like to believe that I am not. Please prove me wrong!
2) This one I can live with, but it still irks me; Where is the "brushed stainless-steel housing"? If that refers to the upper casing of the works of the machine, it certainly feels like plastic to me. Anyone?
3) The condensation rolling down the back of machine when lid is opened. Poor design, but I can probably deal with that also.
4) After just the initial brew cycle with just water, then the two others mentioned above, the lid doesn't want to close all the way, as if warped. Has anyone else experienced this?
If these issues did not exist, I would gladly give a 5 star rating. As is, 3 stars for a good idea poorly executed.
If anyone can shed any light on the warming issue I would be eternally grateful.
Thank you.
Customer Review: Knowledge is priceless... Summary: 5 Stars
Problems of LEAKING reviews by others is "operator error" and ignorance... The directions are clear not to OVERFILL (if you do, it'll leak out the back spout/handle)... Says NOT to open the lid for 10 minutes or condensation will run off the back... (people are trying to remove the used grounds immediately, causing their own problem)... Some claim the "fuel gauge" for coffee doesn't work (it'll say empty UNTIL coffee is brewed!)... and the side water level, it will show amount of water added immediately, then as it brews, that level will go down to zero, while the "fuel gauge" on front, continues upward... Directions also state that the bucket 'handles' should be FORWARD or it impedes the coffee flow, which will spew it out... (easy enough to place them forward people!)... Do NOT use too finely ground coffee as it BLOCKS the water from flowing thru to the reservior.... (water has to go somewhere, so it will overflow)... "Medium" ground is stated by the booklet!!!!... READ IT!!!!!.... The people who claim it stopped working MAY be legit... Make sure the basket AND filter are both ALL the way down or the station will NOT function... I agree that things can break, but most every complaint written in these reviews is pure lack-of-knowledge because the people did not fully read the booklet that came with the product... I love this brew station... If you use it as Cuisinart directs, it does not leak... Make sure the clock matches the programmed time, else YOU will think it broken ... If you set it for 7pm, it will not turn on at 7 am... Users are to blame for 90% of the bad comments on this wonderful coffee maker...Definitely worth buying... Coffee stays hot, tastes great, and is extremely EASY to operate
Customer Review: Worst ever coffeemaker - DO NOT BUY Summary: 1 Stars
My husband splurged on this $100 coffee maker as a gift for me, and it has been a major disappointment. First, I like to take a travel mug of coffee to work in the morning, and there is no safe way to fill anything other than a short mug without spilling coffee and being burned. The dispenser is a cute gimmick for lazy weekend mornings when you stay home to drink your coffee, but don't plan to take a travel mug to work.
Second, no matter how careful I am, spilled water gets all over the counter every time I try to fill the water reservoir. Get used to keeping a towel handy. This might be a minor annoyance to some people, but I have never owned a coffee maker that I had to clean up after so much before, and it gets annoying very quickly.
Third, it feels like there are a lot of putzy parts to clean, rinse, assemble every time you want to make a "pot" of coffee. I miss the good old days of plunking in a couple scoops, pouring the water (without cleaning up a big puddle) and pushing a button. My husband never did quite figure out all the steps required to make coffee with this unnecessarily complicated device.
Finally, and MOST IMPORTANT, within about 6 months the coffee began leaking out the spout, and the problem progressively worsened. Initially we tried keeping a large mug under the spout, but after several more weeks the machine became dangerously unusable because scalding hot coffee pours out the spout almost as fast as it is made. Yes, we cleaned it with vinegar (a few times,) yes we changed the charcoal filter (another extra annoyance with this machine,) and finally we chucked the pretty but useless contraption into the dumpster.
A big waste of $100.
Customer Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
We are very picky, so don't be deterred by the lack of a fifth star. If I knew how to do it, I would rate this coffeemaker at 4.5 stars. We purchased this coffeemaker to replace a similar Hamilton Beach Model which in the year we owned it, had sprung a small leak. We've become attached to the on-demand feature and purchased this out of desperation. We were very pleasantly surprised! The coffee maker almost never drips and then only from the lid when it is raised. Cuisinart, to its credit designed the lid to catch the drips in cleverly installed channels, however some condensation slips past and ends up on the counter. To ensure safety, Cuisinart also designed a little awning over the power supply opening at the back of the machine. Why not five stars? Only to encourage the next designers to figure out a way to channel all the water drips on the lid back into the tank. The coffee gauge, another very nice feature is also a bit inaccurate, but good enough to remind you to turn off the power when you drain the pot before the timer turns it off. One of the best features about this model is that all the removable parts are dishwasher safe (at least top rack) - a distinct improvement over the Hamilton Beach which was impossible to really clean due to the dire warnings about immersing the coffee pot tank. Some reviewers complained about the low clearance, however Cuisinart built the removable drip tray over a U shaped base so it is very easy to move the coffee maker forward about 2 inches overlapping the counter (the weight is at the back), remove the drip tray and even a Star Bucks mini thermos will fit under the spout. All in all, a very nice addition to our kitchen.
