Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Brushed Metal

Customer Review: Now I know why I got mine so cheap
Summary: 1 Stars

I picked up one of these at my local Goodwill Store for $10. When you buy anything with moving or electronic parts at a thrift shop, then there's a 95% chance it's broken. But the price was right, so I took a chance and bought it. When I got it home and tried it out, I was shocked to find that it worked perfectly. And I was happy for two weeks, until I read these reviews. You see, I don't program my coffee maker. I just make coffee whenever I feel the urge, and that can be any time in the day.

When I read the reviews I saw that a great many people people had problems with the premature failure of the electronic timer on this machine, due to condensation shorting the timer out. So I tested my machine's timer, and lo and behold... it wouldn't work. So this explains how it ended up in a Goodwill Store and how I was able to buy it for $10.

But like I said, I never used the timer anyway, so for me this machine is great. Especially for ten bucks! For my needs, this is a five star product, but for everyone who actually uses the timer to have fresh coffee waiting for them in the morning before they go to work... then this coffee maker is worthless. Which is why I gave it one star only.

So the bottom line is... the timer was poorly designed and placed to get ruined by water condensation, and if you want a programable coffee maker than DO NOT buy this model. But if you never use a timer, then it's really a slick little machine, especially if you can find one for $10 like I did. This machine is such a clever idea, I'm amazed that Cuisinart hasn't fixed this design problem, or at least created a better new model with this design.

Incidentally, if you want a reliable coffee maker, then the Cuisinart Brew Central DCC 1200 is hard to beat. Just pass on the DCC 2000.

Customer Review: I love it!
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw this coffee maker at a local department store and was immediately was drawn to it's carafe-less design since I have a tendency to crack them. I took one home that night and set it up. Thought it made great coffee, no complaints. Later that evening, I got on amazon to read reviews for the machine and based on what I was reading, decided to wait before making my review. I have now owned this coffee maker for three months. The machine is easy to use, looks nice on my counter and makes great tasting coffee. Like a lot of other people say, I can enjoy a cup several hours later (I have my auto off set at four hours) and it still tastes fresh. Now to give my take on some points that many others have negative views on. First. And most importantly! Cuisinart absolutely does give you something to fill the reservoir! Like I know several before me have mentioned, when you lift out the carafe to rinse it and clean it, simply fill it with water and use the handle and the POUR SPOUT to fill up the reservoir. Another commonly mentioned issue is the size of the opening to fill the reservoir. It is a little small, but I've found that simply by pulling out the "stalk" that holds the carbon filter, that makes pouring much easier. All of my travel mugs fit under the spout once the drip tray is removed, you will see a convenient cut out in the plastic indicating where to place your cup. I suppose some may be too tall, but I have not had a problem. Lastly, I have found no need for a light underneath the machine. I don't know of anyone who makes and pours coffee in the pitch dark and I really don't understand why people say they have trouble measuring the amount of liquid in their mugs. So basically I just want to say that I think this is a great coffee maker that makes great tasting coffee!

Customer Review: Just finished w/ our 2nd unit & it sucked too!
Summary: 1 Stars

I just had to have this coffee maker when I saw it! My husband agreed it was the best one out there to date for features and hello...pour on demand, keep warm for 4 hrs! Plus, I love Cuisinart products. I don't mind filling it up with my pitcher that we have, no biggie...you get used to where to fill it up after a couple times where to stop for the fill mark or you just have a mess to clean up, it's just water right?! I liked being able to turn the machine back on to heat my coffee up later if I didn't finish it all, very nice feature that the Hamilton Beach one doesn't have.

However, not long after we bought it things started to go wrong :( I started getting black bits in the bottom of my coffee mug, that were NOT COFFEE GROUNDS! It was the plastic pot inside melting away, it had to be, believe that one gentleman Chen about plastic and heat people! It is true! Then it would turn itself off whenever it felt like it and we had to unplug the unit and hope that plugging it back in after a couple minutes would make it work again. The first unit just stopped working completely one day, same issues that we are having now with the second unit with the black bits. We didn't have to unplug it all the time but the time on it would always be wrong no matter how many times we set it right (it did that for a couple mos), I guess that was the sign for us that it was going when the clock started messing up.

I won't get another one, but I will miss it and the Hamilton Beach one sucks too and I am getting rid of it after 2 days. I am on the hunt for a great coffee maker and this sadly is not it. Good luck in finding it but be careful with this one folks! Both units we owned less than a year, not worth the money for a high end coffee maker and a Cuisinart!

Customer Review: Best Brewer
Summary: 5 Stars

Somewhat a coffee pot freak in search of that perfect brew, I buy any new and different gizmo coming on the market. I have several under-counters, single cup, 5 cup, Keuring, etc., I've had them all. By far, the DCC-2000 is the best of the lot. I'm now on my 3rd unit having worn the others out, and was surprised to find that, unlike so many good products gone by the wayside, the quality remains the same while the price is stable. Moreover, I've noted several improvements: [1] Previous units produced excessive steam/vapor; so much so that the lid would be slightly raised from the pressure. No more. [2] the simulated stainless steel was a bearcat for water spots, fingerprints, etc. The material is now "muted," eliminating this eyesore. [3] The brew is hotter. [4] They've added a Warning Light when it's time to purge the unit of chemical build up. This will be of no value to me inasmuch as I use filtered water, thorughly rinse and air the unit after each brew, and religiously purge my unit. An ongoing concern of others has been the difficulty in filling the water reservoir. True, reconfiguring the water level indicator to the left side would alleviate the problem. Meantime, I use a large, clear plastic bottle upon which I've marked different cup levels with a marking pen, then simply fill to the desired amount and pour. One trick to keep your brew tasty even longer: After the brew cycle has finished, wait about 5-10 minutes allowing the brew basket to drain, then SLOWLY raise the lid just enough to remove the basket/used grounds and discard. This will negate built up moisture from filtering down through the used grounds and producing a bitter taste. Another tip: I ordered my DCC-2000 on 3/14 and had it on the kitchen counter by 3/16. Amazon.com is the only way to buy!

Customer Review: JUNK + AWFUL CUSTOMER SERVICE = DO NOT BUY!
Summary: 1 Stars

Whilst I love the design and look of this coffee maker it is a piece of Junk! We had 2 of these; the first one lasted a little over a year and then quit working one day like a lot of other people have said. I could leave it for a few hours or a day and it MAY start working again or it could cut off in mid stream but that's not reliable! So I thought it was a fluke and purchased another one. The second one died within 6 months of purchasing it; same problem.

When I called Cuisinart they were all friendly and said they would replace it; well that was back in October 2009 and it's now June 2010 and I still have yet to see a new coffee maker; I have made repeated calls and written several letters all to no avail. I finally gave up and went and bought a Hamilton Beach Brew Station 12-cup programmable coffee maker and it has been wonderful; not to mention half the price.

I will NEVER purchase another Cuisinart product again; their customer service stinks! I wrote a letter to them outlining the number of calls I'd made; who I had spoken with and what I was told each time I called; and 3 WEEKS after I sent that letter a woman called me at home and left a message for me to call her back; well I've tried calling at least 10 times and each time it just rings and rings with no voice mail and no one answering. Obviously Customer Service is NOT a priority with them.

If you haven't already purchased this coffee maker then save yourself the time and DON'T!!!! If you have just purchased it and still have the box ... pack it up and take it back and get your money back then go and buy a Hamilton Beach 48464 Brew Station Programmable Coffee Maker for $60 and treat you and your family to dinner with the money you saved!
