Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Brushed MetalCustomer Review: Keep it clean! Summary: 5 Stars
My wife bought this for me over two years ago. My model doesn't have the water filter, but I would have used my pitcher filter anyway.
I saw a bunch of griping reviews about the tank having problems. The trick there is to rinse the tank between every "pot." Swish the water around so it gets up in the back by the gauge. I use a few ounces of water, swish them around in the back, and repeat once. I have had no issues whatsoever with the tank, and I make two or three small "pots" a day.
Every couple of months or so, I see that the heating plate is getting discolored and I'll put a capful of bleach into a couple of cups of water and let it soak for an hour or so. I rinse it several times and everything is like new.
For large gatherings, I make several full pots and pour them into large vacuum jugs. It's as easy as using a pot (probably easier), as I just use the handle to lift the tank out of the unit and slowly angle the spout into the jug. It's halfway through the second pot before a carafe brewer would be finished with the first.
My one gripe is that Cuisinart defines a "cup" as 5 ounces for this maker, so the 12 cup unit holds just shy of 8 real cup (next thing you know, somebody will want to pass a law making pi equal to 3.) Not a big deal for me as we don't drink 8 cups a day.
Uses standard basket filters, and this is the only coffee maker I've used that tastes pretty good with a reusable gold mesh filter (not included.)
Customer Review: This was not a good choice for me Summary: 3 Stars
I've owned this coffeemaker for about a year now, and I regret the purchase.
This machine is well-built, and the controls are easy to use. It's easy to program, and the programming is quite versatile. It makes pretty good coffee.
I have used thermal carafe coffeemakers for many years. They keep the coffee fairly hot, but more importantly, they keep the coffee tasting freshly-brewed for many hours. The coffee flavor from the Cuisinart DCC-2000 suffers after sitting in the machine after an hour or so. I like to have fresh coffee available throughout the day, so I often end up filling a thermos right after the coffee finishes brewing. If I let the coffee sit in the Cuisinart too long, it seems to pick up a plastic flavor from its bucket. The flavor of the freshly-brewed coffee is pretty good, but I have to say it doesn't compare well to the flavor from my glitchy old Black & Decker thermal carafe machine.
The biggest problem I'm having with the Cuisinart is cleaning the coffee bucket completely. I rinse the coffee bucket thoroughly after each use, and chunks of coffee float to the surface. This is not from the bottom of the bucket; this coffee scrunge is coming from the chamber that houses the coffee-level gauge, which is enclosed within the side wall of the coffee bucket. It is not accessible for cleaning. The coffee gauge idea is nice, but it is so not worth the trouble of trying to keep it clean.
I'll be going back to a thermal carafe machine.
Customer Review: Cuisinart Coffee on Demand--Disappointed Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this unit 3 weeks ago when we finally got tired of our Kitchen Aid Automatic drip constantly leaking coffee all over our counter. We were impressed by the design of the Cuisinart, and even more so by the thought of a carafe-less unit. As far as convenience, this unit can't be beat, but I wish I could stop there. Since using this coffee brewing system, we have yet to have even 1 decent cup of coffee. After the first few bad cups, we decided that since we really liked the convenience of this unit, we would keep it a little longer and just try some other coffee brands and flavors--it didn't matter, no matter what we used in this coffee maker, we found the coffee to have an 'odd' and weak flavor. Even if you use more coffee, you get get a stronger 'odd' flavor and somehow, still weak. For me, I've had a metallic taste that I can't get rid of since I started using this coffee maker. My husband and I are wondering if it's maybe caused by the metal hot plate that is inside where the liquid sits. Between the plastic and metallic tastes, sadly, we are giving up and returning the unit for something else. Too bad, because if it made a good cup of coffee, we'd never get any other brand. The taste of the coffee this made vs. my former Kitchenaid is like night and day. Even if the Kitchenaid leaked, it made great coffee. I wouldn't recommend this unit, especially if you are a person who loves a good cup of coffee. Very sorry to have to give this unit up..but I love my coffee
:(
Customer Review: Great Coffee Summary: 4 Stars
I received my Coffee on Demand coffeemaker today and the first pot brewed was a success. The last coffeemaker we bought we had to try several times to get a good tasting pot of coffee (and would have problems getting a consistent taste when switching coffees) but this was perfect on our first try. This machine looks great on the counter next to our other stainless steel appliances - it has a sort of commercial look to it which looks good in today's modern kitchens. After two hours, the coffee didn't taste burnt - it tasted as fresh as the first cup poured. And still steaming hot!
The reason I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that there isn't enough clearance to dispense coffee into a travel mug - I solved this by pulling the bottom tray out and lifting the maker slightly to get our travel mugs under the spout (you can't see it filling so be careful.) Also, the inner reservoir that holds the brewed coffee is all plastic and I was worried about a plastic taste to the coffee - but the coffee tasted great! The only other thing that's a bit lame is the gauge that tells you how much brewed coffee is left - looks like it belongs on a car dashboard, not a coffeemaker but...I would definitely recommend this product despite these minor faults. Cuisinart also has a great website for buying replacement parts and/or the charcoal filters that they recommend being replaced every 60 days.
In short, you won't be disappointed with this cofeemaker.
Customer Review: Good coffee maker, poor design and quality Summary: 1 Stars
Makes great coffee, but you're lucky if it lasts more than 1 year. I am now on my 4th Cuisinart DCC-2000 in as many years. After about a year, give or take a month or so, it dies. I have experienced all the problems with my 4 coffee makers other reviewers have had. It's a great concept, but poorly designed and unreliable. The good reviews this unit has gotten are more than likely from people who haven't had the unit very long. Other reviewers have hassled with warranty replacements and shipping costs. My suggestion is to do what I do. I paid for the first one initially (about $100). Because it's not a cheap coffee maker, when it died, I went to a local store, and purchased a new one. Then a week later, I put the bad one in the box and returned it to the store for a full refund. It's under warranty, but this way is less hassle. The store does not lose out because Cuisinart reimburses them for a returned unit. I have done this with all subsequent bad units. Therefore I have only paid once for this piece of junk and maintain a relatively good coffee maker for about another year. Until they get it right, I will continue to do this because it's an expensive unit and the company should not be rewarded for making a poorly-made product. I also hate caraffes. The Hamilton Beach equivalent, although about half price, has worse reviews, so I'll keep playing the exchange game until they finally make one that hopefully will last for more than about a year.
