Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-2000 Coffee-on-Demand 12-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker, Brushed MetalCustomer Review: No carafe - Cool! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this coffee maker about 3 years and no problems. I'd buy another if this one quit. Looks great and I only rinse out the inner carafe if there's leftover coffee in there. I'll run it through the dishwasher every month or two as well as the filter basket. Makes great coffee and it only tastes burnt if you let the last cup sit there till the machine is ready to, or already has, shut off. I occasionally use the timed mode and that works just fine.
Filling your cup can be a challenge without good lighting. (Suggestion Cuisinart: put a LED in the fill area that comes on when the lever is pressed). The bottom tray pulls out to fill tall cups and with huge cups you might have to tilt it up some.
Most negative reviews complain that it is hard to fill with water without making a mess. I keep a leftover Bunn pitcher in the cabinet next to the coffee beans and raw sugar and have no problems filling it if I don't just throw water into the machine. My wife misses a lot though. There is a passage next to the fill area that lets the water pass through onto the counter. My theory is that it's there so the water doesn't end up in the heating area and short out the machine. It's no big deal really, you just wipe up after your spouse like normal. Ha Ha.
My brother bought one after I did and it broke after a year two. I wonder if they got water into the heating element. Anyway best coffee machine I've ever had, I recommend it if your hand-to-eye coordination is normal. Keeping it looking good takes about 10% of the effort compared to a separate carafe type coffee maker.
Customer Review: Disappointed Summary: 1 Stars
This expensive coffee maker looks like a well-made, brand-name kitchen appliance, but don't be fooled. It is a poorly designed and apparently fragile machine with many faults, not the least of which is it's life span, or lack of. It is hard to clean after use, allows water (condensate) to run down the back and onto the counter when the lid is opened and splashes unless tall cups are used. Twelve months after this overpriced piece of junk came into my kitchen, it simply and without warning, stopped working. Given the 3-year warranty, I returned it to Linens & Thing, where I purchased it and they, surprisingly, gave me another one without question. In fact, I got the impression from the customer service representative that this wasn't the first failure of this coffee maker she'd seen... when she called the stock room to bring one up, she didn't even give the model number, just asked for one of "those Cruisinarts (her pronounciation)coffee makers". The second one lasted 14 months before again simply failing to come on one morning. No amount of fooling with the controls and plugging and unplugging would bring it back to life. Neither of these coffee makers were ever subjected to abuse and were keep clean (although cleaning is a major chore and should be done after every use) and had vinegar run through every month. Bottom line, this last one went into the dumpster and I bought a $20 Mr. Coffee. At least, if it stops working in a year, my average annual cost for coffee makers will be less than the $50 for the Cuisinart. If I could, I would not give even one star to this POS.
Customer Review: Think twice... Summary: 3 Stars
The first time I purchased this coffeemaker, it worked for about a month and then stopped. When I lifted it, I noticed that there was a lot of water on the counter and down the back of the coffeemaker. I also noticed that there was a little opening on the bottom of the coffeemaker that was sitting in the water. I wondered if the water getting into the coffeemaker was the problem. I returned the coffeemaker to the store and got another one, because I really liked it other than the leaking problem. This time, on the way home, I stopped by another store and picked up a wire mesh desktop letter tray. It looks tacky, but I turned it over and put it underneath the coffeemaker. The water drips through the letter tray and doesn't pool under the coffeemaker itself. Since then I've had no problems with it shutting off and it has been almost two years. However, the clock has never worked and therefore, I've never been able to program it. That wasn't important to me because I don't wake up to an alarm and would rather make the coffee when I needed it. I mainly purchased it the first time because it didn't require a carafe. I also like the clear beeping that signals when the coffee is done and when it shuts off after two hours. It is easy to clean because the reservoir that holds the coffee lifts out. This would also be the way you would have to fill a thermos because the dispensing area is not tall enough to accommodate some take-along thermal cups. I may not purchase this particular product again, but I will find another coffeemaker that doesn't require a carafe.
Customer Review: I LOVE IT Summary: 4 Stars
This will be my 3rd DCC 2000 Coffee on Demand coffeemaker. The only reason I am not rating it a 5 star is because I have had to replace it twice in the past. The first time, it was under warranty and Cuisinart GLADLY sent me a new one. Now, that it has went "way past" the "3 YEAR WARRANTY", the 2nd one has quit. We are heavy coffee drinkers, we probably fix 6 pots of coffee in a day. I would say that is more than the average household would use.
After the last one quit, I started using another coffermaker for about 2-3 weeks. I thought I would find something cheaper than the Coffee on Demand. It did not take me long too realize that I had made a mistake and just how much I missed the Coffee on Demand coffeemaker. The Coffee on Demand makes STEAMING hot, always has GREAT tasting and never bitter coffee. Your last cup taste as good as your first. It has a programmable timer and it also alarms you when your coffee is done brewing. Another thing I love is that you don't have to worry about breaking a glass carafe, it does not have one. All you do is just sit you coffee cup down under the coffermaker and push the handle to fill your cup up, "I LOVE IT." You can make from 2 cups to 12 cups.
I have owned many coffeemakers in my life and the Coffee on Demand is by far the best I have ever owned. Like I said earlier, from my experience Cuisinart, they do stand behind their products.
So here I am ordering yet my 3rd Coffee on Demand, that should tell you how good they are. I found out it is well worth the money, and you will too.
Customer Review: I'll buy it again.... Summary: 4 Stars
The bottom line: I owned this coffee maker for probably 2-3 years and finally encountered the same problem as everyone else. The power switch failed. My coffee maker was the slightly older model (2007 or 2008) and perhaps Cuisinart has fixed this by now.
The longer review: Makes great coffee - tastes great, stays warm for 90 minutes plus, no burnt flavor when getting a 2 hour old cup, etc. The trick (like with other coffee makers) is not to grind the beans too fine & use good coffee/water. There are two pieces in the interior, a reservoir and a holder for the filter. They both can be removed and cleaned, making the unit VERY easy to clean. The unit will accept standard round filters, or a standard filter basket (which will save $ in the long run). The unit is filled with a pitcher of water (you need your own pitcher - buy one at the dollar store). One drawback is that larger cups (travel mugs, etc) don't fit under the dispenser. You have to fill a regular mug, then pour the coffee into the travel mug. One more drawback is that the unit is prone to the occasional "coffee disaster" where somehow the dispenser gets stuck in a slightly open position during brewing (and while nobody's watching the coffee maker) resulting in quite an impressive spill.
In the end, we looked at other makers and decided to get this one again. I suppose we're on the the every-other-year plan with Cuisinart, which makes this coffee maker a little expensive. I'm guessing if we had a glass pitcher we'd be replacing it at least that often :-).
