Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-1150BK 10-Cup Classic Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, BlackCustomer Review: Works very well, and no problems. Summary: 5 Stars
My 10 year old Krups coffeemaker finally died, and was replaced by this new Cuisinart 1150. I did a lot of research on different makers and models, and read a lot of reviews prior to making my selection. I've been using it for a month now, and am entirely pleased. There have been no issues at all with coffee spilling on the countertop (as reported by some other reviewers). All you have to do is follow the easy instructions and insert the filter basket and holder correctly (which have a guide), and put the pot in its correct position - which are all simple to do. I've tried the various options on brewing coffee, and found that warming the pot with hot water does lengthen the time the thermal pot will retain the heat of the coffee, which tastes fresh even after 3 or 4 hours. Be aware that Cuisinart measures their 'cups' at only 5 ounces, so you might have to brew another pot sooner than expected. That isn't a big deal to me, and so I went with this 10-cup model instead of their 12-cup version because of its other features. For the price, I think its a great value and makes a really good cup of coffee.
Customer Review: wonderful coffee maker Summary: 4 Stars
I have a 2 year older version of this coffee maker, and absolutely love it. Knowing how much I love mine, I bought this one for my daughter for Christmas. It is just as great.
This coffee maker makes a great pot of coffee, and because it shuts off immediately when the brewing is finished, the coffee is not exposed to air so it doesn't get bitter. The stainless carafe keeps it warm for hours. There's no warming plate; it's not needed with the thermal carafe. My son in law made a pot in the evening, and when I arose early the next morning the coffee that remained in the carafe was still hot enough to drink.
This model has a nice addition that mine doesn't have - it has a window on the side so you can see how much water you're adding. The clock readout is very small, and hard to see, if that's a big deal to you. It's not to me; my main concern is whether it will make a good pot of coffee and keep it warm. This baby will do that wonderfully.
The reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 is because of the lack of visibility for the clock; for making coffee it gets a solid 5!!
Customer Review: lukewarm Summary: 3 Stars
Got this coffee maker as a gift. I like that you can program it and wake up to coffee, and I like that it turns off as soon as the coffee is done, so I don't drive to work thinking "Did I turn off the hotplate on the coffeemaker?" And it looks good.
But it makes warm, not hot, coffee. Even the first cup, as soon as it brews, is just warm. So even though the carafe probably works well, the coffee is just never hot enough. I find myself zapping every cup in the microwave. Also, the carafe pours a very thin stream, which I assume is to keep heat sealed in, but maybe a flap could have done the same thing and enabled a good pour.
Pouring water into the tank is also VERY awkward. I end up pulling the coffee maker out towards the edge of the counter, and turning it so I can see the level indicator. And it's very easy to miss the small opening while you're watching the level, despite the thin stream that prolongs the filling experience.
For the price, I think this could have been designed better.
Mostly, I wish the coffee brewed hotter in the first place..
Customer Review: Not such hot coffee Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this coffeemaker as a replacement for a Cuisinart 12-cup coffemaker with a thermal carafe (model DTC-975) which no longer worked because the brew start button had become unresponsive. However, it did make fabulous coffee. From the start, this newer model (DCC-1150) has made coffee that is unremarkable and tasteless. In addition, although the carafe on the old model would keep coffee warm for 6-8 hours, the coffee made in this coffeemaker is barely hot immediately after brewing. Upon experimentation, I determined that the old coffeemaker heated the water to 175-180 degrees F and the newer coffeemaker only get to 160-165 degrees. According to research, optimal brew temperature for extraction of the aromatics in coffee is 175-205 degrees F. Using the "1-4 cup" feature on the DCC-1150, which is supposed to "double heat the water, so coffee is piping hot" only increased the water temperature by 1-2 degrees, still well below the minimum temperature required to extract aromatics from the beans. I think I'll see if I can get may old coffeemaker repaired!
Customer Review: Best Thermal Coffeemaker I've Owned Summary: 5 Stars
We tend to take a couple of hours to drink our morning cups of coffee but like to drink it hot so we've been using thermal coffeemakers for several years. We've had thermos liners break, had lids that were hard to put on *just right* so the coffee pot overflowed, most of them had lids that held water (and that always made me wonder if that water was getting into my coffee-yuck!) and ones that just didn't make very good coffee. We've been using this one daily for a couple of months now and it is hands-down the best one we've owned.
The lid does have to be put on in a specific way, but it's so much easier than most--you line it up and turn it a 1/4 turn and you're done! So far, I haven't seen any way that water can get trapped in the lid. The thermos keeps the coffee really hot! The programming function is relatively intuitive--I had to look at the directions once and since have got it down. We haven't used the cleaning feature yet so I can't comment on how effective that is.
Overall, it's easy to use, makes good coffee, and the thermos works great!
