Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-1150BK 10-Cup Classic Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, BlackCustomer Review: Cuisinart DCC-1150 Summary: 4 Stars
We recently had to replace our DeLonghi that we loved. Our quest for a quality replacement brought us first to a Capresso MT-600, very disappointing, then to this machine. I had poured over all of the reviews and picked this one up with trepidation. Has anyone else noticed how hard it is to find a good thermal carafe coffee maker in a store!? I brought this home and started experimenting. I make 4 cups each morning and on weekends we make a full pot. Small batches can be terrible wth some machines. We like strong, fresh coffee. Here is what I have found:
1. Difficult/annoying to pour- SO SLOW coming out of the carafe!
2. Difficult but not impossible to add water- I just fill my travel mug with water and add, but the first few time I ended up with more water on the counter than in the machine.
3. Nice and hot! I haven't found the temperature to be a problem at all.
4. Small batch setting does an excellent job making flavorful HOT coffee
5. Make a full pot with caution- if you go slightly over the 10 on the water indicator it WILL overflow
6. Quiet brew process- which is nice
7. Crazy end of batch beeps, but it is no different than my washing machine :)
8. Delicious coffee- the coffee is great. Nice body, strong flavor, great temperature, all the annoyances are minor. The end justifies the means!
Customer Review: Buy It Summary: 4 Stars
I read every review anybody ever wrote for a coffee maker. Conclusion: Somebody doesn't like something about every coffee maker that's ever been made.
What I've found in the month that I've had it: The carafe keeps the coffee hot for at least 3 hours. It pours without going all over the counter. I can't make the thing drip one drop. I still pour my cup over the sink from years with a different pot where about half of the coffee went down the drain. Not this one. Not a drop. I measured the brew temp. with a meat thermometer stuck in the grounds at 202 degrees. Any coffee maker will overflow all over the counter if the pot isn't correctly positioned. It's easy to position correctly and a quick peak at the pot:drip hole makes it obvious if it's where it belongs. Some reviews complain about difficulty in pouring water from carafe to the water tank. Could be, I've got a kitchen faucet that lets me stick the faucet right into the tank so it's not a problem for me. It's probably time you get one of those anyway. It is a little hard to read the water level scale on the tank, but I'm old. I put a black dot with a magic marker at the 6 cup mark. Problem solved.
Summary: It brews hot, stays hot in the carafe, easy to pour with no mess. That's really all I was looking for. I'd recommend and I buy another.
Customer Review: Disappointing design and performance...though Cuisinart good company. Summary: 2 Stars
We received the DCC-1150 for Christmas 2009. My wife and I work from home and the idea of the thermal carafe coming with us to our office area after brewing in the kitchen sounded great. My parents have the 12-cup thermal carafe DTC-975BKN and it has worked great for them for years.
Initially, the coffee carafe didn't keep the coffee as warm as I expected. Then, the intermittent clogged thermal carafe cover would cause unexpected coffee overflows all over the counter and kitchen floor. (I would "clean" the carafe cover as best as I could - since it is a sealed unit.) I did not know why it would become clogged - it's just coffee.
The last time the carafe overflowed all over our new kitchen counters, I cleaned it up and took out our old Cuisinart coffee maker (thank God I still had it for when we had company). It still works fine, but just doesn't have the thermal carafe.
Lastly, I noticed the protective coating on the DCC-1150 hot plate flaking off. I called Cuisinart and they are replacing my unit under their 3 year warranty (which is a great warranty), but I will sell this model when the replacement comes and get the DTC-975BKN.
Cuisinart is a great company, but this product is not a model they should be proud of.
Customer Review: no longer cuisinart quality Summary: 2 Stars
If this coffee pot is any indication, then the Cuisinart brand just took a nose dive in terms of it's quality and performance. Did I hear the company was sold? Up to now I loved the Cuisinart brand and have the blender/FP, toaster, and owned two previous Cuisinart Thermal programable coffee pots, which I bragged about endlessly. I often used fresh ground beans and filtered water, but my guests regularly told me how wonderful my coffee was. I bought this one for a friend and this week one for myself when my old one died after over 1000 uses.
I am so embarrased!! This new version is NOTHING LIKE the old version. The coffee does not taste the same, does not get hot enough, nor does it stay luke-warm for more than two hours. The new "thermal" carafe is of lesser quality and the top is stupid. It's not only hard to grab but does not seal anything like the former models. I tried using the 1 to 4 cup setting which supposedly makes the coffee extra hot, and I always preheat my carafe and even my cup.
Both mine and my friends are going back, but now what do I do for a fanatstic coffee pot under $100?. Unless I can find the old model I guess I will need to switch brands and read the reviews MUCH more thoroughly. I LOVE AMAZON.
Customer Review: DC1150BK vs. DC1200 Summary: 2 Stars
Our new DCC1150BK was to replace the Cuisenart DCC1200 maker that bit the dust due to our lack of maintenance (decalcification is foreign to our psychy). This new maker yields hot coffee only if you drink it fast. The hot plate warmer turns off as soon as the coffee is brewed. Regardless of the insulated pot the coffee does not stay warm long. The directions cautions you not to put it on the stove to warm (the plastic handle would melt immediately). In our household our fresh pot may be tapped for an hour...or more. By then the coffee is luke warm to cold. The only option to have a piping hot cup is to microwave individual cups. What a hassle!
The new DCC1150BK is on the way to the yard sale in the sky. Our replacement is the latest model DCC1200. It has an even nicer features our previous DCC1200. The hot plate has a thermostat for "Hi", Med" and "Low". It also has a timer for the hot plate that can be set to go off from 0-4 hours. In addition the DCC1200 has a lot more stainless steel and less plastic than the DCC1150BK. Something we have found, is that the glass caraffe of the DCC1200 can be warmed in our microwave without problem after the warmer times out. I'd recommend spending the extra and get the DCC1200.
