Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart DCC-1150BK 10-Cup Classic Thermal Programmable Coffeemaker, BlackCustomer Review: I was worried by the bad reviews, but it turned out fine for me Summary: 4 Stars
I really was afraid to push the "buy" button on this one. When the same product gets such wonderful AND such horrible reviews, you have to wonder what's up. My conclusion (perhaps incorrect) after using this maker is that the product is the same but the users are VERY different in their use and expectations. I've used this maker every day for several weeks now - it makes good hot coffee in about 10 minutes, keeps it pretty hot-to-warm for a few hours, and has not overflowed at all. As for the complaints, I think the problem is largely that too many people today expect the world to conform to them, have little give-or-take in changing their ingrained behavior, and aren't careful. Think teen-ager and you get the picture ;)
My only two "complaints" would be: 1) that yes indeed it will take 20 to 30 seconds to pour a cup of coffee out the thermal carafe - BUT - I understand this is a tradeoff for a design that keeps coffee hot without keeping the hot plate going (and using electricity) so I'm ok with it. If you're the sort of person that JUST CAN'T WAIT THAT LONG then look elsewhere. 2) I only want to make about 7-8 cups at a time, and you can't see how much water you're filling the carafe with (like a glass one), and you can't really pour the last bit of liquid out of the carafe due to its design (I just empty the last bit into the sink when I wash it out). So I simply fill another quart-sized container from the sink and pour it in that way (which I think also helps with the not-hot-enough coffee complaint I address below).
As far as those saying it makes "cold" coffee... I suppose some do like it scalding hot, so hot that after heating up the mug it's poured into it's STILL scalding hot ten minutes after pouring it. I'll grant this maker doesn't make it THAT hot. I suspect that using cold water from the refrigerator and/or pre-chilling the carafe with that water won't help. Use a separate container to fill the maker. It's just water, so it's not like you're making more dirty dishes.
Additionally, as at least one commenter wrote, this maker might not be for you if you just aren't a particularly careful person, ESPECIALLY if you are going to set it to start automatically (when you won't be there to catch your error before a mess is made). If you don't get the lid on right (trust me it isn't THAT hard to get it right, but it is an extra step regular glass carafes don't require, and it is possible to screw it up), or you don't make sure the basket of grounds is pushed all the way down, or you grind your coffee super-fine and fill the basket all the way up to make it super-strong - then it could overflow. Maybe the fact I only make 7-8 rather than >= 10 has helped too.
So I think it really comes down to you: if you're not careful, won't pay attention to a couple of relatively large "details", can't wait 20-30 seconds to pour a cup, and/or like your coffee super-strong and just shy of boiling, then you will NOT be happy with this maker. Such a person will probably need to use a traditional glass carafe and a really hot burner under it.
I can't say how long this maker will last. Everything's made in China these days and it's quite the crap shoot in terms of quality. It feels pretty sturdy to me, but then I'm not rough on my belongings so your mileage may vary.
