Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart CRC-400 4-Cup Rice CookerCustomer Review: Some Tips For Purchasers: RINSE/WASH Your Rice! Summary: 5 Stars
Please make sure that you are rinsing/washing the rice. Ignore the warning on printed manual suggesting that you should not wash your rice in the cooking bowl. As long as you're careful, you shouldn't have to worry about scratching the non-stick material. Whether it's brown or white rice, it is necessary to run water into the metal cooking bowl which contains your rice. The following steps provided below should help in this endeavor.
[STEP ONE]: Using a measuring cup, scoop the desired amount of rice into the metal cooking bowl. I purchase my rice in bulk (100 pound bags) for about $35 each from Asian Midway Foods (A wonderful store here in Madison, Wisconsin).
[STEP TWO]: While running water from kitchen sink, shake(violently, if need be, but not recommended) the bowl. Once the water level is about an inch or two from spilling over, disengage the faucet. Spend maybe 15 to 30 seconds moving the bowl around in circular motions until you feel that the water is as cloudy with starch as it can get before emptying the water from bowl.
[STEP THREE]: Start from '[STEP ONE]' all over again and repeat steps 1&2 about 15-20 times. Rinsing/washing is necessary until you're able to consistently notice clear water in the bowl.
[STEP FOUR]: Once the water appears to be extremely clear from your rinsing efforts, pour out water from bowl. You are now ready to add water for cooking. The trick here is to use the first bend line of your index finger as a measuring tool. Add water while your index finger is lightly coming into contact with the top of the flat and level rice mass. As previously mentioned, fill water up to the first 'notch' or 'bend line' of your index finger. Personally, my fingers are a bit more lengthy than most Chefs I know, so I have to make sure to fill only to about half an inch under the 'bend line'.
[STEP FIVE]: Wipe the exterior of the metal cooking bowl down with a kitchen towel to remove any moisture. Place metal cooking bowl into rice cooker and add the glass cover. Then, plug rice cooker into electrical outlet and of course remember to flip the little cook switch.
[STEP SIX]: The rice cooker knows the type of rice you use because of magic (well, not really). So, just let it cook. :)Brown Rice takes close to one hour to cook(It's healthier and the least processed type of the two main varieties). While, White Rice usually takes about 17 or 18 minutes for me.
This is how you cook rice that doesn't boil over and only leaves insignificant amounts of rice starch at the bottom of the bowl after cooking has completed. If you've followed any of my advice and your rice comes out too wet or too dry, just add less/more water to cure respective issues on your next attempt. While it may seem a bit time consuming, this is really the only way that many people can even begin to appreciate the savory taste of rice. I purchased this rice cooking unit in October of 2010 and I am able to make delicious rice on every attempt following the aforementioned steps. In fact, I've only had the boiling over issues with other substandard & inferior cookers. I would just like to add that I use water that goes through the process of reverse-osmosis (from 5 gallon jugs) in the final stage that involves filling the bowl with water that is to be absorbed by the rice during cooking. (Tap water works just fine but I prefer this.) I hope my list of steps helps someone because I dislike seeing so many reviewer here complain about such a great & reliable product that just needs a little tender loving care. Good luck to all. :)
