Customer Review: Very mixed results. Bad recipes??

Well first off, I guess the warehouse club by my house was maybe not going to carry these anymore. They were going for twenty five. Christmas 2010 was coming so I loaded up a cart and bought 5 of them. I left 3 for someone else. I went by that isle 5 mins. Later and those were already gone too. I gave 3 away as gifts. I asked my Mom if she would want one. She said No - so I was left with 2. It can take hours to make a loaf and usually we want to give one away and keep one. So, what the heck, it was only twenty five - so I opened the other box and both get used simultaneously. What's interesting is that I've noticed in the recipe book that in some cases the smallest loaf calls for more water than the medium loaf. I'm not a cook or anything but, I'm thinking this has to be a mistake. It's usually the smallest loaf calls for 1 cup and 1 table spoon of water and the medium loaf calls for only 1 cup. And the large calls for 1 and 4 tblspns or 1 and a 1/4 cups - something like that/something significantly more than 1 cup. It's as if whatever fraction after the 1 cup was left off, in error, on the medium loaf recipe for a number of recipes. I haven't checked the other set of directions to see if it's the same way as in the first book - but I will.
I tried making wheat bread where the small loaf called for 1 cup and 1 tblspn of water and the medium called for 1 cup (only) in a side-by-side test. The small came out ok. The medium was obviously way too dry right before the baking cycle. If fact, the paddle at the bottom of the pan wouldn't even turn the dry dough ball! It only swept out a hollow round cavity out of the bottom of the "ball" of dough. I put ball in quotes, because really it was just a lumpy, dry mess. I didn't even bother to let that one cook. The other was a mostly smooth, round ball of dough (as you would expect before baking bread). This really reinforced that some recipes could be wrong because both were started at the same time on the same counter top using same new ingredients with the same make/model (CBK -100) bread makers.
I did the Apple Raisin loaf once. I dumped in the apples and raisins when it beeped and for some reason they didn't really mix in. When it beeped to pull out the paddle - I noticed virtually everything I dumped in was at the bottom of the pan under the dough. That may have also been a medium loaf, also, where the dough was too dry to allow the paddle to fold in the extra ingredients. On a more recent small loaf - I tried adding a little less flour. I think the flour can become too packed into the measuring cup and you end up with a little more than you think you have. That loaf came out great.
We use all new flour, yeast, at room temp., etc., every time. We try to measure as accurately as possible. I'd say our results are around 50% to get something that's edible - we usually do the medium loaf. I will try splitting the water difference between large and small.
This might be another reason they were twenty five. People not getting good results. The 5 CBK-100s I got had obviously never been out of the box.
