Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart BDH-2 Blade and Disc HolderCustomer Review: Disks don't fit; triple check compatibility! Summary: 1 Stars
I so hate to give bad reviews, but it is their own manufacturer's fault (with a little help from Amazon). Firstly, this review is 100% related to the advertising of this accessory box and not about the accessory box itself. I recently purchased the Cuisinart Elite FP-12DC and Amazon recommended this accessory box to go with my purchase. I double checked the food processors that this box was compatible with and ordered it. And yes, I read the reviews. This box is "supposed" to work with ALL Cuisinart food processers except the DLC-XP, DLC-5, and LPP. And no, you can't even make your accessories fit into this box. The adjustable slicing disk is too thick, and even the shredding disk is too thick. The lid won't close. It also does not fit the fixed stem blade, and there are only two slots for blades, which I have 3. I am returning it and ordered the appropriate accessory box for my Cuisinart. Unfortunately, I had to find out what was the right accessory box by going to cuisinart.com. I love Amazon, but they really failed me in this instance. However, they have a wonderful return policy which makes it super simple to return when these mistakes are made.
Boooo for the advertising of this box and the inconvenience, but YAAAY for the Amazon return policy!
If you purchase a Cuisinart Elite FP-12DC , the right accessory case is FP-12BKSC. It retails on Cuisinart's website for $40, so Amazon has a better deal at $28.49. Cuisinart FP-12BKSC Elite Collection Accessory Storage Case for 12-Cup Food Processors, Black
Customer Review: Poor construction, but serves the purpose Summary: 3 Stars
My holder arrived in an unusable condition. The plastic is so cheaply molded and poorly finished that a large scab of excess material prevented it from even being opened. I had to disassemble the whole thing (tough to do without cracking the plastic), take a Dremel tool to it and grind down about an eighth of an inch of material from the back of the lid to make it where the lid could even open. The lock mechanism is a little tricky at first, and not well-explained or obvious in operation... you have to pull the knob out toward you before turning, and then it locks in the open position. To close again you have to shut the lid firmly and give it a slight twist in the "open" direction before it will unhitch and lock.
Overall though, once I made those modifications and got used to the lock operation, I have to say it serves the purpose... it stores the blades and disks safely and securely. I would have expected better craftsmanship of a Cuisinart product, though... this was definitely not a polished product.
Update: My mother got a similar Cuisinart food processor and wanted this blade and disc holder, so I got it for her last Christmas, figuring that I could do the same tweaking to it so that it would work fine for her out of the box. When I got it and checked it out, either they've improved their manufacturing process and quality control, or I just had a really bad one for myself, since the one I got for mom worked fine.
Customer Review: Handy, recommended, but Summary: 4 Stars
This is a handy device to store the parts that come with the Cuisinart food processor (the Prep 7 in my case). It attractive, keeps the parts protected, easily accessible, and clean. And really there isn't a good alternative and the price on Amazon was pretty decent, so I'd recommended it.
However I am happy the price wasn't higher because if I had to pay close to the retail price I'd be disappointed by the lack of any positive engagement to hold the dough blade in place. It depends only on placement and gravity to keep the blade place - moving the holder causes it to slide about inside. It would be nice if the holder were heavier, or had some weight added to the bottom to keep the it in place when trying to open it, especially when trying to open the lock with one hand. And tied with the weight, a (removable) bottom to protect fingers from getting to the blades from beneath.
I wonder how many people buy more than 1 extra blade for their Cuisinart? If it is rare than I guess having room for three is enough for most people who might buy 1 more to go with the 2 that come with the food processor, but I'd like to see a version that holds 5 or 6 of the circular blades. Yes, I know they sell the "pancake" style that only holds the circular blades that I could use for the "overflow", but it doesn't match this design.
Customer Review: BE CAREFUL!!! Summary: 2 Stars
This product works well in storing your blades and other parts, but good luck getting them out of there! Once the top closes, it locks shut, preventing your items from jumping out? In order to unlock the lid you have to pull this teeny tiny knob and then turn it WHILE you are pulling. The problem here is that there is no grip on this knob, and if you are in the kitchen, half the time your hands are soaking wet or greasy, so with no grip on this knob, you can run into some trouble. To alleviate this problem, I've replaced the knob with one similar to that of pin ball shooter, it has a convex shape with a knob at one end, giving you better leverage when opening the lid.
There is just one last thing I will say about this too, BE CAREFUL WHEN PICKING IT UP. Don't put your hand through the bottom like I did and slice open your finger!!! There is no base to the base of this product, meaning when you pick it up from the bottom, all the blades are protruding from beneath it!
I'm giving this thing 2 stars, one for doing it's job of storing things, and one for the price. The other three missing stars are for the horrible design flaws in this item.
Customer Review: does the job, but poorly Summary: 2 Stars
I should have paid better attention to the reviews! While this product does store 2 blades, 3 discs, and 1 stem, it appears to be poorly designed.
As a previous review stated, the bottom is open; I'm not sure how likely it is to cut your fingers because of this, but just doesn't seem too sturdy to me. 2 of my three discs fit fine, but the grating disc had to be forced in.
Blade storage: - I thought the blades would have sat flat in the storage container, but they don't. The metal blade is "stored" by sliding one side of the blade into a slot, but if you do that, then the rest of the blade is suspended in air, not resting on the plastic. If you try to store it by putting the base of the blade on the plastic, then it's not secured, and slides around. The dough blade kinda fits in its designated space. The disc stem space does store it well.
I didn't really want or need the locking mechanism. Looks like an afterthought, or someone with really thin fingers designed it, since the tab is maybe the size of a nickel.
Returning it.
