Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Cuisinart 21-Piece Knife Set with Block and Bonus Poly Cutting BoardCustomer Review: Here is a Solution for the Cracked Handles Summary: 4 Stars
I, like many others, received this set of knives with cracked handles. In my case, these are now no longer in current production, and the sale was non-returnable; however, all was not lost. If you own this set of knives, you can exercise your right under their lifetime warranty. I called Cuisinart's toll free number, and was directed to the pfaltzgraff company that handles the Cuisinart cutlery. After speaking with them, and being bounced around a little, I was finally put in contact with a KitchenAid customer service person. I was instructed to go to the pfaltzgraff website and choose the Cuisinart set that was most like the one that I currently owned. They said that they would send me a completely new set for free! These are out of production, so they can't just offer individual matching replacement knives. Since I wanted some time to choose wisely, the person gave me the direct phone number to the KitchenAid warranty department, 866-457-9340. Do not be concerned that you are speaking to KitchenAid about Cuisinart knives: they and others are all owned by Lifetime Brands.
Other than the cracked handles, this is a GREAT set of knives. The variety and number of specialty knives is hard to beat.
I also purchased two sets of Guinsu Chikara knives, the 12 piece and the 5 piece prep set. It took two different sets of the Chikara knives, and more money, to get the equivalent number of special knives that were included in this one set of Cuisinart knives. I do like the Ginsu Chikara knives better than the Cuisinart, but both have their good points.
If I had it to do over again, I would have skipped this set for the two sets of Ginsu Chikara's, but if you already own this set and are unhappy with the cracked handles, THEN CALL THE NUMBER AND GET YOUR FREE REPLACEMENT SET!
Customer Review: Cracked but Beautiful Summary: 4 Stars
I read the reviews that said these knives had cracked handles and the return process was frustrating, but I asked for them for Christmas anyway. It was no big surprise, then, to see that some of the handles were cracked around the rivets. It looks like the material couldn't stand up to the pressure. I suspect the company has already fixed that problem in the new (more expensive) version, but mine are cracked.
Still...these knives are beautiful. They are heavy-duty, stunning on my counter and they make a frightening "ching" as I pull each one from the block. Despite the cracks, the quality is outstanding. For that price, you couldn't touch these knives unless they were cracked. I paid the same price for my last set (which was a lesser quality brand, for sure) and got only 12 flimsy knives.
If the cracks in the handle will bother you, don't buy them. Chances are good that some of the knives will have cracks. However, if you really want a nice set of knives but don't want to pay lots of money, this is a great option.
Hmmmm. When I put these in my basket, they were 39.99. I just found out my husband paid 99.99, and now they are on the site for 159.99. It seems to me these reviews are relative. If I had paid $40, this would be a great deal. For $100, I expect the knives to be in one piece. This is an edit, so I can't change my rating, but I would definitely say, "buyer beware."
Customer Review: Hand wash and towel dry or they rust Summary: 3 Stars
I ordered these knives to treat myself because I deserve to have nice things. At first I was tickled with them they are eye catching and they are very sharp, They are the sharpest knives I have ever owned I sliced tomatoes so thin it looked like they came out of a slicer. I have been hand washing them right after I use them ( I have had them less than a month)and putting them back in there block for safe keeping. I have noticed that the steak knives have got rust spots on them, even if I leave them out to air dry before replacing them into their block they get rust spots, I tried scrubbing the rust off with a sos pad and it only scratched up my knife blade. These Knives have to be hand washed and towel dryed or they will rust. If they did not rust I would have rated them 4 stars however they did rust and I think that for as much as I paid for them ( 75.00 with shipping) they should not be rusting, I will probobly have to replace them in a year because it is a pain to wash and dry them as quickly as they seem to require so they don't rust. :-( I'm sad because I wanted to treat myself to something nice and I thought since they were expensive ( to me ) that they would last me forever and clearly they will not.
Customer Review: Really like them, but they rust Summary: 2 Stars
So despite the reviews, I purchased this set from Amazon in mid-September. I was careful when I received them to prevent rusting. Washing right away, keep them from being soaked in water etc...But they rust really fast anyways. My first knife rusted just after my first use. I placed it in the sink and left it overnight (not soaking in water) and noticed small rust spots on one side. I also started to notice rust spots on my steak knives. I think the humidity in the dishwasher (during the drying process) caused them to rust too.
I am very sad :( because I really like them. But I don't think they will last even 6 months. They are well weighted and cut well even the steak knives. Plus, I got a great deal on Amazon. Can't beat the free shipping and no tax.
So Amazon will take them back and give me a refund even though I don't have any of the packing materials. Threw them all away when I received the package. This is why I love Amazon!
Now all I have to do is tell my husband who is attach to the set. Probably should have gone with a Chicago Cutlery set.
Customer Review: Great Knives! Company is aware of problems and will replace broken sets. Summary: 5 Stars
These knives are great for the price--the blades are sharp and fairly substantial. I use them on a daily basis, and with regular honing, they keep a really nice sharp edge. They won't compare to really high-end knives, I'm sure, but for the casual cook they're perfect.
When I got them for Christmas, I noticed (as have many other reviewers) that several of the handles were cracked at the rivets. I emailed Cuisinart to see if I could get them replaced. They gave me the number to Lifetime Brands who handles their cutlery line (1-800-252-3390). I called them, and found that they were aware of the problem and have stopped making the red knives because of it. They sent me a new set of great looking stainless steel handled knives. They warned that it would take a couple of months, and at exactly two months, I received the new knives. (I didn't mind using the cracked handles for a little while longer.)
I'm very happy with both the knives and the great customer service I received.
