Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot SCVP600-SS 6-Quart Smart-Pot Programmable Slow Cooker, Stainless Steel

Customer Review: The Quart SIZE seems to matter
Summary: 3 Stars

I've been reading tons of reviews all over amazon and elsewhere. In one place a reviewer wrote that the crock pot should always be at least half full. It seems that consistently the larger the quart size, the more problems there are with burning. I'm suspecting that the smaller ones do better because they are fuller. The crock pots that are 5.5+ in size generally tend to be 2-3 stars with complaints of burning and overcooking, while the smaller ones tend to get 4 stars and have much less complaints about being too hot. (There are 2 large crock pots with slightly better reviews.)

I do cook for larger groups on occasion and the potential for cooking larger amounts is appealing, but all the reviews are enough to convince me that a smaller one is going to give me better results for most of my cooking. So I'm going with something in the 4 qt. range. If you're worried about the "burn factor" as you're investigating what type to buy, just thought this observation may help.

In the end I didn't buy this crock pot, so I just put what the average rating was for the crock pot because it wasn't an option to leave the rating empty.

Customer Review: Great cooker, but programming could be better
Summary: 4 Stars

I love this crockpot and I haven't experienced a problem with it running hot. It's a great size and the crock is easy to clean and/or put in dishwasher (depending on how much time I have to clean up). I love how simple the programming is and I dislike how simple the programming is. ;) By that I mean... I love the push-button programming and how the crock automatically turns to "warm" until ready to eat. I dislike that 4 or 6 hours is programmed for "high" setting, and 8 or 10 hours is programmed for "low". I recently made the first of several recipes that recommended cooking on low for 6 hours -- and I could not get the best of both worlds because you can't program time and temp separately on this model. So I had to set it for 8 hours on low and be there at the 6 hour point to turn it to warm for another hour os so until we were ready to eat dinner. I still like this model very much, but some recipes will not be as convenient to cook if I have to watch the time. Overall I am still very pleased with this model -- a huge improvement over my old one with the knob and only "low", "high" and "off" settings.

Customer Review: a dissapointment from Rival
Summary: 2 Stars

It works OK for me making things like stock - it the recipe calls for a lot of liquid, it works OK. Dryer foods, thicker sauces definitely do burn. Despite the name it is in no way "programmable" - rather you have a choice of 3 cooking times, no temperature control whatsoever. That limits the usefulness of this pot greatly.

To make matters worse, the handle on the lid crumbled off after about the third use. This prevents me from utilizing it for it's other possible use - warming cider & spiced wine - as you need frying tongs to pry up the cumbersome handle-less lid, a hot, curved piece of glass. That's just not feasible at a party, you can't expect guests to do that.

Very disappointing.

Rival does not really do a decent job of offering replacement parts; I could get a whole new lid but not a replacement handle. For 10$ to buy the lid, and 9$ more to ship it, I'm half way to the price of a whole new crock pot from a different company. There is no way I'm paying $19 for another lid which will almost certainly fail too. What a shameful waste.

Customer Review: Awful disappointment
Summary: 1 Stars

I bought this slow cooker yesterday and was excited to make my first meal in it. I decided upon a vegetarian chilli: I added all the ingredients last night, set it to 8 hours, and went to sleep confident that I would wake up the wonderful smell of dinner already prepared for tonight. What I woke up to instead was a boiling pot of burnt mess. Even though the timer is supposed to automatically go to "warm" once the cooking time has elapsed, this slow cooker was still boiling when I woke up 9 hours after leaving it. The heat apparently generates from the back corner because there was a significant portion of the chilli burnt and stuck to the back edge and back bottom portion of the pot. All in all, I am utterly disappointed. I had read reviews that Crock Pot had put out quality products in this category of cook ware, but that is utterly mistaken. I am returning the item and plan to purchase the Hamilton Beach model - which has gotten primarily strong reviews. My fingers are crossed that their product lives up to my expectations

Customer Review: Too Hot
Summary: 1 Stars

Just like other posters, this Crockpot on the 10 hour setting cooks most recipies in under 6. Many in 4.

This is useless for the throw it in the pot and hope it to be ready later.

Heck the other day, my wife made sure I checked on the meal at the 6th hour. I did, and turned it from the 10 hour setting to the keep warm. The food was good at the 6th hour, it was crispy fried 3 hours later after sitting on WARM. This is a typical crockpot recipe that called for being on high for 8 hours. and this thing on low cooked it in 6 and fried it on warm.

Interestingly, we had a similar earlier model that was white. It didn't have this problem. Then about a year ago it started cooking really hot all the time. This one came as a Christmas gift, yet it is also way to hot.

I would venture to say that given the variability of the reviews that there is a thermal regulator in these things that either goes bad, or just doesn't work on many of them.
