Customer Review: Slow Cooker, Fast Obsolescence
Summary: 2 Stars

Our family eats slow cooked meals about 2-3 times a week so we rely heavily on our slow cooker. Initially, we had no idea what to look for so we just bought whatever the big warehouse store carried. Crockpot, the brand, was what we were familiar with so we went with that. After two of them died on us, we started to figure out that maybe Crockpot's planned obsolescence was just a bit too quick for us.

The slow cooker itself worked fairly well even though it nearly always burned our soups around the top. There are only 4 possible configurations for cooking but we never got it just right. This also made cleaning the crock very cumbersome due to the burnt on food. Still, we learned to live with it and enjoyed eating the dishes cooked from our Crockpot. Until it stopped working.

The first one we bought lasted about a year and we replaced it with an identical unit. The second one also lasted about a year before it just would not turn on when we plugged it in. We got tired of dealing with replacing Crockpot slow cookers every year and chose to replace it with a different brand. We are big fans of slow cookers and Crockpot has some good values, but until Crockpot's build quality improves, we are staying far far away from them.

Customer Review: CRAP!!!!

I got this as a gift. The knob on the top was the first to go; it cracked on the bottom and fell off. I couldn't get a replacement knob, so I used a lid from another Rival crock pot that had melted handles. Guess what? The handles were the next thing to go--one cracked when I picked it up to wash it-thank goodness it was empty! I continued to use it and the second handle cracked off. It had a metal handle under the plastic so I just peeled off the plastic and continued to use it. NOW the stoneware crock cracked from one side to the other and that's the end of that. The stoneware crocks that I have from other crock pots aren't the same size. I wouldn't recommend Rival to anyone. I haven't had a Rival crock pot that didn't have the handles either melt or crack. I didn't have internet before, so I didn't have Amazon and had to buy from the local WalMart. I haven't been able to get any of the parts for the crock pots I have (four!) and Rival says they are all unavailable, even though they are still making the same model!!! How can they continue to make this model but be unable to supply replacement crocks, lid, or handles? This will be the last Rival product that I buy.I had to give this one star, but it doesn't even deserve that.

Customer Review: Cheaply made...and they don't stand behind their products.

I do NOT recommend that you buy this product. I have used mine maybe 6 times annually for the past two years and I just now discovered that the handles on the side of the pot are crumbling. They are literally cracking and falling off in shards. I went to their website ([...]) and it clearly states in their FAQ's that the handles are not replaceable. There is no other recourse I can see except to buy a new crockpot - and, of course, I would not consider anything made by this company. I also concur with charges that this particular model overcooks food.

UPDATE: The manufactuer replaced the product free of charge. Unfortunately, it still overcooks food and I fear that the handle on the replacement will also crumble.

SECOND UPDATE: The handles on the replacement product are indeed crumbling. I am handwashing it (as opposed to putting it in the dishwasher) just to see if I can extend its usefulness but I do not hold out a lot of hope because the crumbling appears to be the result of the heat generated from using the appliance. I hope the manufacturer reconsiders whatever materials they are currently using because it sure is a poor reflection on the company.

Customer Review: This Crockpot is a "Crock"
Summary: 1 Stars

I have this same crockpot except its round instead of oval. The same conditions apply; e.g., heats too fast, too hot, etc. In fact, the extreme heat caused the plastic handle on the lid to deteriorate and it virtually disintegrated. Supposed to be dishwasher safe, but I doubt that for the lid now. The Rival people determined it was out of warranty (by only a few months) and would not replace the lid OR provide a replacement handle. They require you to purchase the entire lid for $10. It seems like replacing the handle, which is only attached by a bolt and nut, would be an easy fix and good for customer relations... but they sent several smarmy email replies saying no. That was the last Crockpot I will ever buy. I recommend the new GE model. It has a retractable cord, an anodized aluminum "pot" that is lightweight, the lid snaps tightly in place for transporting it with no spills, and (best for me) its all insulated, so I can virtually pick up the whole thing on the bottom if I need to without fear of burning myself. After the poor performance of the Rival Crockpot, added to the very poor response from their company, I recommend stay away from the Crockpot brand.

Customer Review: Update: I threw it out.

Do you like the stench of burning rubber as you cook?

Do you want your kitchen to reek of scorched plastic as you cook?

Would you rather smell melting petrochemicals rather than your chicken and dumplings?

If you answered YES to any of the following questions, then THIS is the "Slow Cooker" for YOU!!!

Yes, it cooks on high, low, and warm! It makes a really annoying BUZZ-BEEP when you press a button! And, oh you better believe it - it stinks like a tire fire at the local garbage dump on Wednesdays when you use it!!

I'm really just waiting for this thing to erupt in flames when it's in use so I can sue the people who make this thing and make a few million.
* UPDATE *: I followed a particular recipe to the letter: 6-10 hours on low. After only 3 and a half hours, I had a tub of wallpaper paste! It was disgusting! This crock pot is a crock! I was so mad that my dinner was ruined, I unplugged this thing, carried it (steaming mess and all) and unceremoniously threw it into the dumpster!!!! I am never buying another "RIVAL" product for as long as I live!! CHEAP JUNK!!!!
