Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot SCVP600-SS 6-Quart Smart-Pot Programmable Slow Cooker, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: This crockpot is for you if you like babysitting it Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this behemoth of a crock pot at a garage sale. Wow, thought this was a deal, almost new for $10? Holy cow.
Well, I naively thought the seller was like me who has gadgets galore around the house. Perhaps it was a gift and she didn't need it...
So I test it out. I trusted the thing and filled it up with my meat and veggies and I went to the store......
Darn thing was boiling (so it's over 212 degrees) after I came home (within an hour). What is up with that?
On top of this, I know that meat gets soft if you let it boil for an hour. You cannot possibly cook meat for 4 hours (high setting) without ruining it (dissolving into a mess ...essentially creating pig slop in a pot)
The whole point of having a crock pot is to do some low temp slow cooking (think like BBQ...which is slow cooking) which doesn't boil. Flavors blend and mesh together... vs boiling and cooking it quick with less flavor. Yes, Virginia - there are older recipes out there where they tell you to keep it at 180 degrees or something to the effect of....
Another thing... why can't you program it to whatever hour you want it? Just high 4, 6 or low 8, 10. That's dumb!
Husbands be warned! To not buy for your wife!
All this is good for is a door stop or a planter that I can plug into a wall. Who knows maybe I can make some funky light optic piece. Junk...and not to mention DANGEROUS. This could cause a fire for unsuspecting cooks who turns this on and leaves to go to work....
Customer Review: Much Better Than The Original. Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased a Rival Crock Pot when they first came out. It was a bright red one. I used it for a wide variety of dishes. I had it in the kitchen for over three decades but my use gradually tapered off. One of the problems was that it was too hard to clean (crock could not be removed for washing). Also, the controls were too primitive. My wife suggested that we get rid of it if it wasn't being used. So, reluctantly, it went to the local thrift store. I purchased this new model a few months later.
Boy, what an improvement over the old model! This new one is a snap to clean. The heat and time control are excellent. Every dish I've tried has come out perfect, or nearly so. My wife is amazed at my cooking ability. Well, there's not much of a secret. I simply select simple dishes, put the recipe in, set it for the time I want and all dishes have come splendidly.
In reading over other user reviews, I notice a lot of highly negative reports. I don't understand. I've had problems of any kind except for one time when I tried to cook an amount that was too small for the size of the pot. The ingredients were boiled dry and burned. That was my mistake, not that of the pot. I've found that the pot should be about 2/3 full for best results and I've had no problems with preparations of that size. Perhaps my decades-long experience with my original Crock Pot has helped out. I'd say this Crock Pot is a far superior model to the original. I've had no problems in the three years I've been using it.

Customer Review: Not a "Smart-Pot" Summary: 1 Stars
OK, where do I begin? I purchased this slow cooker a few years ago and the first time I used it I was concerned by the amount of steam that would escape while cooking. I called Rival and they agreed to send me another lid.
Well, received the lid and the next time I cooked in it the steam would escape again. This would cause spatters on the counter around the crockpot. I had the bright idea of placing a dish towel under the crockpot and then placing a dish towel on top of the crock pot. This seemed to work for awhile.
This slow cooker does not cook slow. It is not "smart". It cooks way too high on the "low" setting. You can only set this crock pot to four different settings (2 high and 2 low settings).
Most of my meals cooked way too fast (it did not matter how full the crock pot was, same result filled 1/2 to 3/4 full). The final straw was when I placed ribs in the cooker to cook on low for 8 hours along with BBQ sauce and the ribs burned when I returned to check on the pot after 6 hours!
That was it and I went on a quest to find a "smart" pot that allowed me to be the smart one! I can decide how long I wish to cook things. [...]
Now granted it is only a 4 quart size, but the temperature cooks low when set to "low" and high when set to "high".
Yes, I did cook ribs in that one and guess what? They came out perfect!
Customer Review: Fill it up! Cooking for Larger Quantity Yields (6 qts) Summary: 5 Stars
Fill it up!
This slower cooker works perfectly. I just wish Rival made the exact same model in a 3 qrt version for deserts.
***Cooking for Larger Quantity Yields***
Most recipes are recommended for 3 to 4 1/2 quart sizes. When preparing recipes in a larger unit, such as a 5 to 7-quart slow cooker, here are guidelines for doubling or tripling ingredients:
* When preparing dishes with beef or pork in a larger unit, browning the meat in a skillet before adding to the slow cooker yields the best results; the meat will cook more evenly. Roasted meats, chicken, and turkey quantities may be doubled or tripled, and seasonings adjusted by half. Caution: Flavorful spices such as garlic and chili powder will intensify during long slow cooking. Add just 25 to 65 percent more spices as needed to balance the flavors.
* When preparing a soup or a stew, you may double all ingredients except liquids, seasonings, and dried herbs. Increase liquid volume by half, or as needed. The slow cooker lid collects steam, which condenses to keep foods moist and maintain liquid volume. Do not double thickeners, such as cornstarch, at the beginning. You may always add more thickener later if needed.
* When preparing baked goods or cheesecakes, it is best to simply prepare the original recipe as many times as needed to serve more people.
Customer Review: The Slowcooker is Excelent, its YOU that burns the food. Summary: 4 Stars
My wife and I have had this cooker for about two years. She is I will say, an excellent cook. But since our's is getting old, we started shopping for a new one on Amazon. To my shock, I see the very model I own has over 50 1 star ratings! I love every meal my wife makes in the crock pot, and yes, it gets hot. Very hot. It is so hot that if someone without the knowhow on how to use a crock pot cooked in it, they could burn their food. For the people who do not know you need a sufficient amount of liquid and/or masses of food so as not to have the liquid completely boil out and regulate the temperature of the apparatus on the whole. You will definitely burn food if you are unprepared to use a six quart cooker, they need to be at least 2/3 full before turned on. If this requirement is met, you will(likely) have a great meal in a decently priced, very sturdy slow cooker. I also think its worth mentioning it is a poor craftsman who blames his tools...On that note, I wish you could choose the amount of time you set the pot for, but you get 4 and 6 hours on high and 8-10 on low. Easily worked with if you remember to change it over at roughly the right time. Anyway, the cycles will cook your stuff well as long as you follow the rules. After all the meals I have enjoyed out of this baby I can't recommend this product enough.
