Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot SCVI600B-SS 6-Quart Premium VersaWare Slow Cooker, GoldCustomer Review: Good but not as versatile as claimed Summary: 3 Stars
Having read the manual thoroughly, I'm more than a little disappointed that this can't be used on a cooktop as advertised: "one-pot cooking--saute, cook, serve, and store all in the same pot. Use the removable oval stoneware in its heating base, on the stove, or in the oven to create delicious meals of all kinds."
Instead, all recipes call for browning in a skillet. This was what we were trying to avoid based on the above description; we wanted to be able to do that inside the cooker itself. Since it was stoneware we didn't expect to find warnings about "sharp instruments."
The top portion is very attractive and the controls seem to be sturdy. The bottom half is ugly and one wouldn't want to leave this on the stove simply because it's so large. It says it's dishwasher safe, but you had better have a very sturdy washer indeed to handle this heavy container. All that said, I'm sure it will excel. I just wish one could brown beef/pork in the base unit instead of separately on a skillet. It contains a rack/diffuser which you are to use if you were to heat up directly from a smooth top stove. This too is an inconvenience but is designed to prevent scratching and to diffuse the heat. Since it's considerably smaller than the crock itself, I don't see how that would work.
Customer Review: The BMW of Crock Pots Summary: 4 Stars
(Please note that this review is based on just 5 days of ownership.)However, I bought this item as an upgrade to my (first ever) $25 4-quart Crock-Pot I bought in October of '07.
I think this gadget [the Crock-Pot] has enormous potential. Whatever you cook in it brings a heavenly aroma to your entire house and the food comes out better than what you could have cooked on the stove-top, grill, or in the oven. (With Versa-Ware you can combine most of these methods.)
The cheapest cuts of meat come out as gourmet dinners.
Among other things - the Fondue Pot has become obsolete as a result of using this gadget which I originally avoided purchasing because of the limited space in my kitchen.
The only reason I did not give this product 5 stars is that the lid is not transparent. Why not use oven-proof glass?
I so enjoy taking a peek of the food that's cooking without opening the lid.
Another reason is that this thing is not fully programmable - in other words - you can't set it for X-amount of hours on high and then switch to X-amount of hours on low. (This is what some recipes call for.) ...while you are at work or sleeping.
Otherwise a great product!
Customer Review: VersaWare Slow Cooker Summary: 5 Stars
This is a very well made and nice looking slow cooker that is easy to use and easy to clean. The one-container ability that the VersaWare liner provides is a big plus to saving room and dirty dishes. The liner is very easy to clean and maintains a much more attractive finish than the previous glazed stoneware liners I have used over the last ten years. This cooker also seems to cook a lot more uniformly across the liner than my previous stoneware cookers did.
As has been a very common complaint with Rival cookers - they cook on too high a temperature when set to "low". This cooker seems to run at medium and high temperatures and is not a very good choice if you plan on leaving it for more than 6-8 hours. The warm setting works great and is perfect to re-heat items that the oven would normally dry out. A great product as long as you realize that it cannot be left for a full day without burning the food. If you do plan on leaving it all day, then make sure you add about 30% more liquid so that it doesn't dry out and burn.
A great cooker and well worth the money.
Customer Review: Slow Cooker Cooks TOO Fast! Summary: 3 Stars
This pot was purchased to replace another Rival model crock pot that I'd had for 15 years. Although this new Rival Slow Cooker is designed to cook food slowly, this particular model does not. It has 3 settings; LOW, HIGH, WARM (WARM setting is not designed to cook food, ONLY to keep it warm), but the LOW setting cooks at a high heat very fast. I have only made spareribs ribs so far and they were thoroughly cooked and falling off the bone after only 4 hours on LOW as opposed to the 8-10 hours the booket calls for (yes, they were delicious, but the sauce was almost burned). The handles also get very, very hot despite the specially designed padded area and it is a MUST to use hot pads when handling. The base has only 3 feet, which surprised me, as it makes it a bit unsteady when moving the filled pot. All this being said, the purchase price is very reasonable for the product type and, although it cooks far too fast and hot, it will come in handy with those limitations planned for. Rival is an excellent brand name, but this particular model crock pot does anything but COOK SLOWLY.
Customer Review: awesome crockpot Summary: 5 Stars
Rival SCVI600B-SS Crock-Pot 6-Quart Premium VersaWare Slow Cooker I purchased this crockpot for my wife. She loves it.It is the best. Her first meal she made was a chuck-roast with potatoes, carrots and onions. She cooked it on low following directions from the included cookbook and it came out fantastic! She has since made stuffed peppers, baked beans, spare ribs and many more. She loves the feature of being able to brown ontop of the stove and then adding the rest of the ingredients. It is everything it is said to be--truly one pot versitility. It cleans up beautifully with just soap and water,-no scrubing. you can use it in the oven too! It is worth every penny. Also, I highly recommend Amazon for your purchase. They have the best prices and we have ordered from them many times and have always received our orders in a timely fashion and in excellant condition. We have never had an issue with anything we have ordered.
