Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock Pot SCCPVP553-B 5.5 Qt Slow Cooker Smart Pot with Little DipperCustomer Review: Gets the job done Summary: 4 Stars
I like making Chili. I don't like making it over the stove because it is easy to burn Chili. Enter the crock-pot.
This is a good-size crock pot coming in at 5.5 Quarts. You could make a pot roast in this, a full-batch of chili, etc. etc. It is also somewhat programmable.
The pot has 5 settings:
- 4 hours (230 watts - measured)
- 6 hours (230 watts - measured)
- 8 hours (175 watts - estimated)
- 10 hours (175 watts - estimated)
- "keep warm" (switches between either 0 and 230 watts)
In each of the first 4 cases, the crock-pot will run for the designated period of time and then automatically switch to the "keep warm" setting.
In order to determine the power setting, I used something called a PowerAngel (frequently called a Kill-A-Watt) to measure the watts that the device draws. With the 4 and 6 hour setting, it clearly draws 230 watts pretty steadily. With the 8 and 10 hour setting it appeared to vary between 230 and 120 watts, so I estimate 175 watts.
Unfortunately, I kind of wish that this product would allow independent setting of the power level and the time to cook. I prefer to do my Chili on "Low" (175 watts) for 4 to 6 hours. Unfortunately, this crock pot only allows me to do one, but not both. So I have to push 8 Hours (Low) and come back after 4 hours and push the "Keep Warm" button.
Not a deal-breaker, but it would have been nice if the two aspects: power and time, were kept separate from each other.
The biggest upside is that the price is right and it gets the job done.
As an aside, I noticed a strange odor when I first started operating the unit, although it appears to have dissipated by now.
