Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Crock-Pot 64451-C 6-1/2-Quart Oval Slow Cooker, Stainless SteelCustomer Review: Very frustrating Summary: 1 Stars
I've found that the lid on this crockpot is ill-fitting and causes a lot of steam to escape - as in, losing over an inch of liquid over the course of cooking beans, and I had to open up the pot and add more water. Worse, steam condenses to water inside the domed lid, runs down to the edge of the lid and pools on the edge of the crock. Because the edge of the lid is rounded and has very little contact with the crock, it doesn't form a seal; Furthermore, since the lid is thin plastic, it is very lightweight. Thus, that water on the edge of the crock boils and causes the lid to jump up and the boiling liquid spurts out. It runs down the outside of the crock and into the electronic portion, you know, the part that says "Don't cook food in here, risk of electrical fire"?
I contacted Rival about this problem and was told that this ill-fitting lid is a new design feature. I am certain there was a pointy-haired boss behind that spin. I was told that the old, well-sealing lids were building up too much pressure and cracking.
Well, I don't know about the real risk of that, but I can say - I'm far more concerned with the risk of electrical fire. If they'd needed to vent some pressure, they should have built a vent into the lid near it's apex.
Furthermore, slow cooker recipes always assume that there is little or no evaporation. That's why they tell us to reduce the amount of liquid in a recipe when we convert it to slow cooker. And, they tell us not to lift the lid and let the steam out because it'll reduce the temperature and make cooking longer. If there is this much evaporation now "built in" to this design, well, that just shoots all those ideas to heck, now, doesn't it? And in fact, a batch of presoaked chickpeas took 8 hours on low, and then overnight on high, before they were done - and required two additions of water because of evaporation.
They offered to have me send it in, with a $10 check for return shipping, to see if they could do anything about it; But, given that they'd already told me this was how it was supposed to work, I was loathe to spend another $20 on an item that only cost $35 in the first place.
Description of Crock-Pot 64451-C 6-1/2-Quart Oval Slow Cooker, Stainless SteelCook for the whole Family with Rival's 6.5 Quart Oval Chrome CrockPot/Slow Cooker This handsome brushed-chrome slow cooker is similar to Rival's 6445-BC 6-1/2-quart model. Added to this model for extra convenience is a warm setting for keeping a meal at just the right serving temperature. Oval in shape and holding a generous 6-1/2 quarts, the cooker suits a large family or a couple who likes to entertain. The heavy stoneware crock lifts out of the heating base for easy cleaning thanks to a stick-resistant coating, and is attractive enough to serve from right at the table. While the crock is safe for use in the microwave and dishwasher, it is not intended for use on a stovetop or under a broiler. With two cook settings, low and high, the pot can slow cook a wide variety of stews, roasts, and soups, recipes for which are included in the owner's guide. The glass lid, also dishwasher-safe, sends moisture back into the pot while at the same time allows contents to be viewed. The loop-style lid knob and improved sure-grip handles are heat resistant. Measuring 17 by 8 by 12 inches with a 40-inch power cord, the slow cooker is covered by a one-year warranty. --Ann Bieri
