Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of CorningWare French White 7-Ounce Ramekins, Set of 4Customer Review: Reliable products from old standby Corning Summary: 5 Stars
I first acquired some of these when a local supermarket chain was having a purchase-stamp promotion years ago. They have been excellent and have survived years of use, subjected to all sorts of thermal torture. Being manufactured from this kind of ceramic material, they are easy to wash to a high standard of cleanliness. And they are very simple and attractive.
I was pleased to find that Amazon is now selling them, and have ordered extras, as they are perfect for a brunch I'll be cooking for later on. I had been hoping to get more.
There are a couple of caveats:
(1) They don't stack particularly well; they aren't designed to.
(2) If you like to microwave your hot breakfast cereal like I do, these don't work because of the nearly straight sides. For that, you need to use a vessel that allows your cooking cereal to bubble up without overflowing. Again, they aren't designed for that use.
In addition to frequent non-cereal-cooking microwave use - sometimes straight from the refrigerator, I plan to use them for individual servings of a dish that needs to go into the oven for final cooking. And I often use them for cold cereal, fruit, etc.
Customer Review: Exactly what I needed for Crème Brulée Summary: 4 Stars
My better half loves Crème Brulée and Tiramisu. Since I've finally perfected making Tiramisu at home, I decided it was time to move onto the other. The recipe I planned on using called for 8 ounces Ramekins, but I figured these would work just fine. Although there are many brands out there I happen to like CorningWare, so it did make a difference in my purchase.
The recipe was time consuming and probably a bit more difficult that I had expected, but the end result was pretty good. I was wishing I had this item Typhoon Limousine Black Cook's Torch when it came time to caramelizing the sugar, because putting them under the broiler heated up the creme more than he prefers. I'm not completely satisfied with the recipe so I will continue to test them out. I'll also say that in reading everyone's reviews, I have so many more ideas in what I can use these for too!
I did pick these up on the 4-for-3 promotion, so keep that in mind when ordering because you can make a good deal even better.
Customer Review: NOT for use with a TORCH or BROILER Summary: 3 Stars
These ramekins are NOT for use with a TORCH or BROILER people! Read their bottoms for the caution. I know the Corningware of old could be used on open flame, but not these. I have several colors of these and they all say the same thing (disappointing, eh?). Porcelain ramekins=ditto. These may end up exploding in your faces if you use them inappropriately, so I hope someone who is will come back and read this.
There are ramekins that can be used with a torch or under the broiler (check out Le Crueset or Emile Henry items) here at Amazon.
These little items are great for storing grated garlic and such in, so you don't ruin your small plastic storage cups (like Tupperware). The stoneware won't absorb the odors like plastic does. They also can be used in the oven, but their bottoms don't indicate at how high of a temperature, which does give me pause. I wish Corning's new owner would bring back the Corning that we all used to love and trust.
Customer Review: One broken, otherwise okay. Summary: 2 Stars
When they arrived I could hear that one or more were broken inside, and I was very right. One is broken and one is cracked down the bottom. I called Amazon and sure, they were nice, but this isn't the first time I've recieved a broken item from them.
I am currently waiting for the 12-piece corningware set and I am pretty uneasy about receiving them. Hope they're not all broken too.
Other than the fact that they're broken, the two that are still whole are quite nice. Smaller than I thought, but they tell you how big they are so I should have expected it.
Customer Review: Very useful little dishes! Summary: 5 Stars
We purchased these on a whim one day browsing for some kitchen accessories to go with our new house. We were not looking for them specifically but luckily for us they were on sale for even less than what they are now so how could we resist. Getting to the point though these little ramekins are very useful. They great for use as little fruit cups, deserts, or just for snack dishes. They're also perfect for those parties as dip holders. The only drawback to me is they are not stackable which would make them more than ideal but it's a small drawback!
