Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of CorningWare 1035985 French White 20-Ounce MugCustomer Review: Awesome Cup Worth Ordering Summary: 5 Stars
At my mom's house there is an over-sized coffee mug I use for putting ice and various soft drinks in which is awesome because normal sized coffee mugs are RIDICULOUSLY small. I don't drink 8 nor 12 ounces of anything. I also didn't want a tall mug because they are harder to clean. The only unfortunate thing is that this was the only decent mug available on amazon that matched my needs. At first I was settling for this mug because after I order it, I went to a local Safeway and found out they had a couple large mugs at their in-store Starbucks too for around the same price. When I finally received this mug i was SUPER impressed, and I am glad I ordered this rather than buying the ones at Starbucks.
First off, it's really sturdy - could definitely survive normal clumsy handling such as accidental knocking into the sink. A 2 feet drop to the floor though, I'm not so sure.
Secondly, because it's an over-sized mug, it's easier to clean the wide and spacious insides. It's wideness also makes it harder to knock over compared to tall glasses because it's more grounded.
Third, it has more than one uses: you can use it to bake, you can microwave it, refrigerate it, and freeze it. I didn't buy it for these extra attributes, so my review may not be helpful to you in this area. Still, it's nice to know that if a situation came up where I needed to make French onion soup, I know I would be alright.
Fourth, it comes with a cover. Now another review said that the lid was functionally crappy and he might be right. I'm immune to coffee so I don't drink it; and even if I did drink it, I don't like my coffee hot and without a lot of milk and sugar. My first impression is that it's a pretty well built lid, like tupperware. But is it durable and does its job well as a steam vent? I don't know and I don't care. I'm only excited about the lid because it stops dust from collecting inside the cup when I'm not using it!!!
Fifth, it is reasonably priced, it is on Amazon, and you can get your shipping wavered if you put it with another order of $15.
Sixth, the edges (rim) of the mug is splayed out like a trumpet which makes it more pleasant to drink from. I'm not so sure if it's just aesthetically pleasing to me as a personal preference or if it is universally liked as well.
Seventh, it's not plastic. Plastic cups have the advantage of being more durable but they have this smell I don't like and they are just not as slick as a glass or porcelain/clay/stone mug. Furthermore, plastic cups are not as personal.
The disadvantage of this mug is that the holding part of the mug may be too small for some hands. I have Asian hands so it's a perfect fit for me.
Awesome $10 investment.

Yesterday, I tried to bake a potato in the oven using this mug and it turned out only half cooked. The half towards the bottom of the cup had the texture of a water chestnut. The mug protected the bottom half of the potato from the direct heat of the element of my oven, and it didn't get hot enough to transfer the already dilute heat through the air to my potato. French onion soups are different because they are liquid and always in contact with the mug, since the potato isn't in full contact with the mug, the heat of the oven has to travel through that air space to the mug, and the heat of the mug has to travel through the air gap to the potato. So, probably not gonna bake potatoes with it again. Still a great product for what I bought it for.
