This is a great kit for a beginner-better than Mr. Beer, BeerMan or BeerMachine. I don't have any problems (as expressed above) with the spigot coming loose in the fermenter (maybe he had a faulty one) or a leaky bottle filler. I have since advanced my beermaking to partial grain and boiled extracts, but I still use the Coopers as my primary fermenter. It's huge and it's very handy to be able to bottle directly from the fermenter. I love using this thing and the Coopers kits make great beer; they are always fool-proof. In fact, some of the Coopers beer kits I've made taste better than the boiled grain/extract/hops ones I've brewed! My husband and I bought this kit around a year ago. It was our first time brewing beer. He is a beer king now. He brews almost once a week with friends and looking into brewing for a living. But I remember starting out with this first kit. We still use some of the equipment we got in this kit. So the equipment is pretty good quality if it can hold up for a year. Completely worth the money. The beer is standard, that is something you can adjust to your taste when you learn the ropes. The directions are easy to follow. I would sugguest this kit to someone just starting for fun or making it into a full time hobby. And sure the kit has plastic bottles but it's about the beer not the bottles. I purchased this kit because it makes 6 gallons, the fermenter is huge and holds over 6 gal. So one batch of beer with this kit will give you approx. 60 12oz. bottles or 30 24oz. bottles, all the others only made 3 gal. or less and the beer batch kits were more expensive.

My first batch of beer came out ok very drinkable but the Australian lager that comes in the kit does have a little sweet-n-sour after taste, so
now I have several ideas on what I want to do with my next batch,
And eventually I'll create a beer that is to my liking...

My girlfriend bought me this kit for Christmas, and I couldn't be happier.
The best part of this kit, is that pretty much every piece will stay with you as you continue to get more and more into home brewing.
The only two things I WOULDN'T use in this kit are the brewing sugar and the package of yeast. You'll want to replace them with a couple of pounds of dry malt extract and yeast bought from a home brew supply shop.
For anyone who is planning on using this as their jumping off point into home brewing, is to read "How to Brew," by John Palmer (free online.)The crash course gives much better instructions on how to brew your first beer (trust me.)

We are currently enjoying the product of our first batch. It was pretty easy to make, and we had fun during the bottling. I really enjoy the taste. It's kind of like a strong Rolling Rock. According to the instructions, the taste will improve the longer you let it sit, so two weeks after bottling, we are already pleased.
I found a local brew shop that sells the homebrew cans. The owner also let me know about how the sugar affects the taste... anyway, I am going to have fun with future batches, and I like that I can buy get the "refill" cans locally to use with this kit.
