Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Contigo AUTOSEAL Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler, 16 Ounces, SilverCustomer Review: The best...seriously. Summary: 5 Stars
The Contigo Double Wall Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler already has a 5 star rating, but I had to say something. I use a spill proof travel tumbler at my computer so that there are no accidents. I am absolutely amazed at the insulation ability of this tumbler. I poured coffee, hot out of the brewer, into my new tumbler and waited...and waited...and waited for my coffee to cool to a bearable temperature (as I did my old travel mug). After waiting way too long, I finally just opened it up to cool my java. SOOoooo, I learn. I learned that one should have their liquid at a drinkable temperature before putting on the lid. Otherwise, you will be waiting for hours (with a burnt lip) for your beverage of choice to cool. It works that well.
Next was cold beverages. I put some water and ice in my new Contigo at 6pm. At 10 pm there was still ice in my tumbler. Not just "oh, I think I might still hear some ice in there", but more like, "WOW! Listen to all that ice"!
Confirmation - this Contigo Double Wall Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler is AWESOME! I'm just sayin...!
Customer Review: Multiple seal failures and impossible to clean Summary: 2 Stars
A waste of money from my experience. This mug was perfect until I came across two problems, both of which have already been mentioned multiple times -
1. Despite daily rinses, the coffee started to taste sour. A peek into the crevices and crannies revealed disgusting buildups of gunk. The underside of the lid has lots of dark, difficult to reach places that required me to dig through my toolbox for pointy instruments to get to them. I suppose if you have the time to religiously clean this thing every day for 20 minutes using specialized tools you might keep it somewhat clean.
2. Multiple lids have failed to keep their seal. The first one lasted about 2 months, then started leaking coffee all over the place. I ordered a replacement ($7.50 off the contigo website), which lasted about 3 weeks, then started leaking again, getting all over my bag and staining its contents with coffee.
On the bright side their customer service is friendly and helpful. Didn't seem interested in receiving the failed lids to see what happened though.
Customer Review: Great, but with a Fatal Flaw Summary: 2 Stars
As others have mentioned, this is a great cup with a fatal flaw if you drink hot liquids out of it.
First the good: it is well made, does keep stuff hot or cold, and really does not leak. I did the `hold it upside down and shake' test and not a drop came out. If all you ever plan to drink from one of these is either cold or just warm, this cup is perfect.
The problem is that there is no lip on the lid. You can't sip/slurp hot liquid. I know that sounds like a minor irritation, but it makes drinking hot coffee or tea near impossible without the danger of burning yourself. Also, because the liquid goes directly into your mouth, there is no smell factor and smell is an important part of how we taste things. With no aroma, I find coffee and tea don't taste as good.
I didn't keep the mug long enough to see if a smell problem developed.
I really wanted to like this cup. If they put a lip on it, I would honestly buy 8 and throw out the odd collection of other travel mugs I have. Too bad. I've sent mine back.
Customer Review: Wanted to be perfect... but needs improvements.. Summary: 2 Stars
I have been using this mug about 4 times a week for 6 months... but it's time to toss it. The idea of this mug is fantastic and its execution is good, but far from perfect. The design is durable and the no drip lid is very good...but there are a couple problems:
1. The lid has zero insulation. You lose a lot of heat through the radiant heat coming off the lid and as result, your hot drinks cool much faster than in a thermos type design or even a regular insulated mug with a thicker lid.
2. As everyone is starting to mention, the lid cannot be properly cleaned. I've tried the toothbrush, curling up wet paper towels and jamming it in there... but it just doesn't work. This causes your coffee to eventually have a very odd flavor and you won't be able to tell the difference between the gross burnt Starbucks beans you buy and the premium coffee... which sort of defeats the purpose.
Unfortunately I cannot recommend this simply because of the lid design. If you drink nothing but hot water it's probably perfect for you...
Customer Review: Best coffee mug, ever Summary: 5 Stars
It has now taken 10 years, but I've finally found a leakproof coffee mug that is perfect. Well, almost perfect. It keeps coffee hot for 3-4 hours, because it is actually never "opened," except for when you depress the button and take a drink. That way, the coffee is always insulated. The press-button-and-drink feature also ensures that you never knock over and spill the mug. The button does not make noise when you press it, like so many of the other mugs that "click" when you press down the button. That means you won't annoy everyone around you (or yourself) when sitting in a meeting.
One note of mild caution, the first time you take a drink after you fill the cup with fresh beverage, a bit of air gets trapped and it can spray a small amount of liquid up (think water shot out of a whale's blowhole). Just make sure your mouth is over the spout when you do it. Other than that, the mug is fantastic. That small little thing is not worth dropping it from 5 stars.
Buy this mug and enjoy your hot coffee for hours.
