Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Contigo AUTOSEAL Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler, 16 Ounces, Silver

Customer Review: contingo to go
Summary: 3 Stars

Updated review. See below.

This is a really great mug. It does not leak and it really keeps drinks cold or hot whatever your preference. Also, the design is very cool. So, it does everything that it's suppose to do.

The cons are that if you have a drink with ice and the mug gets turned sideways or upside down, the lid tends to sweat. It doesn't leak but it gets wet from the sweating of the ice. Also, others have complained about the lid being impossible to clean. It is not the easiest lid to clean if you don't want to throw it in the dishwasher which I don't want to do with every wash. So, if you do hand wash, it is not really possible to get in there and clean very well. You could consider boiling it in hot water but again it's not that convenient.

Overall, I like my contingo a lot and use it every day.

Update 3/17/10:
Less than a year of use with my Contingo and I have to say I am disappointed that the lid is now leaking. I use my Contingo only for cold drinks and I have put the lid in the dishwasher since the instructions say it's ok. About 2 months ago, whenever the mug is side ways it leaks like there is no tomorrow. Thinking about buying a replacement lid on the Contingo website ffor $7.00 but that seems a bit steep. Wonder if I should invest in a different mug considering I may have to replace the lid every few months.

Customer Review: West Loop Cleanability
Summary: 5 Stars

Millions of West Loop mugs have been purchased, likely making it the best selling insulated travel mug in the country. This is because it offers the highest technology available, as it is both vacuum insulated to keep drinks hot or cold for hours, and features the patented spill proof/leak proof Autoseal Technology. Unlike some other mugs that have an open/close button in the center lid, the West Loop LID IS TOP RACK DISHWASHER SAFE and features an open architecture lid design, meaning the mechanism is not enclosed. This open design eliminates residual liquid so there is no trickling after sealing and allows for easier and more thorough cleaning. Like any drinkware, even glass tumblers, basic care means that mugs should be rinsed after use - particularly with substances like coffee, cream or milk that can accumulate and dry if not rinsed promptly. Immediately after use, always rinse while pressing the Autoseal button, before placing the lid on the top rack of a dishwasher. Given proper daily care, the lid will remain clean. Use and care instructions and additional cleaning and care tips can be found on Contigo's website. If you are still having problems with your West Loop mug or any other Contigo products, please contact the Contigo customer service team shown on the Contigo website, and they will be happy to respond with helpful tips and assist you with your concerns. Sincerely, Contigo

Customer Review: Even the Best Has Its Flaws
Summary: 4 Stars

I was looking for a good travel mug that could keep cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot for at least a few hours. I initially scoffed at the price of this mug. After all, it's just a mug, right?

Well, I've been using it for a few weeks now and it was well worth the $20.

Pros:
- Spill and leakproof: This is great for work and in the car, especially if you're a klutz like me.
- Vacuum seal keeps drinks the way they're supposed to be! I like to drink hot tea in the morning and even 5 hours later, my drink is still warm. With other mugs, they'd be nearly ice cold within that timeframe. You won't get that with this Contigo mug. I would say, though, that it keeps cold drinks (especially if you put ice in it) colder for a longer period of time.
- Attractive design: The stainless steel design is good for those who like a sleek look, and it's probably more durable than the plastic mugs that cost half the price.

Cons:
- As others have noted, it can be difficult to clean. I've found putting some vinegar and leaving it overnight will get rid of the stains on the inside.
- Since the lid has no lip, it's a little hard to drink from. My quick fix is to drop one ice cube into my hot drink. It brings the temperature down just enough, but not too much.

Overall, I'm very happy with this product and highly recommend it!

Customer Review: Fantastic Travel Mug!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I absolutely LOVE this travel mug. I first purchased them last Christmas for stocking stuffers for my grown kids. We loved them so much that I bought more. This Christmas we bought one for all of my husband's employees. They all rave about them. This really keeps hot drinks hot AND cold drinks cold. I went shopping and left cold water with ice in it in my car in June. When I came out five hours later there was still ice in my water. The no spill lids are fantastic. As far as some of the reviews complaining about not being able to clean the lid, I have not experienced this problem. My oldest son is a pilot, so his mug can sit in his car 3 or 4 days while he is on a trip before he cleans it, and he has not had a problem. I just hold the button while running hot water through the lid, hold the button while swishing in soapy water and rinse. I also put them in my dishwasher, but always rinse them with the botton held first. I also purchased a package of Dr. Brown's Natural Flow Cleaning Brushs from Amazon, which are actually for baby bottles, and about once a month or every other month clean the opening with one of them using soapy water. I have never noticed an off smell or taste, and we have been using these mugs for over a year now. I also wash the stainless bottoms in my dishwasher all of the time and have never had a problem.

Customer Review: Doesn't leak. Impossible to clean.
Summary: 2 Stars

UPDATE #2: So I reviewed this product a few months ago and gave it 4 stars. Unfortunately, I now have to revise my review down to 2 stars. This thing is impossible to clean without a dishwasher! After about 6 months of use, the inside of the lid is so skanky, stinky, slimy I can't use the mug anymore. The no-leak mechanism has a lot of nooks and crannies and I can't get in there with a sponge while I'm hand-washing. I've tried soaking the thing in vinegar, bleach, and soap, sometimes for 48 hours at a time, but I just can't get it clean. Too bad.

Update #1: If the mug is full, it will leak. So in the morning, when my mug is full, I have to carry it. But if the mug is only half full or less (like in the afternoon), I can toss it into my bag and it doesn't leak. It's still a great mug--no sloshing and no dribbling while you carry it. It's also easy to drink from and I have yet to get any coffee stains on my clothing as I drink from it while driving to work. But they haven't been able to hermetically seal it yet...

This is a great mug. It doesn't leak at all and keeps your beverage nice and warm all morning long. It's nice looking too. I only gave it 4 stars though because the lid isn't the easiest thing to clean.
