Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Contigo AUTOSEAL Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler, 16 Ounces, SilverCustomer Review: Great product Summary: 5 Stars
This was a replacement purchase for the Nissan tumbler that I lost on the train. I purchased this product primarily because of the reviews and to a certain extent the price. I have not been disappointed; it does what it is supposed to do as advertised. The seal is vacuum sealed and prevents spills and leaks. I once turned it upside down just for the heck of it and not a dropped spilt out. Just be careful not to open the lid after doing this as liquid runs down the lid on to your hands or clothes. Hot coffee is my drink of choice so this tumbler keeps the brew warm for a long time I have tried that in freezing weather and for duration of two hours. Note that I drink coffee made with a percolator and this coffee is boiling hot to begin with. Cleaning is easy in my opinion. Other reviewers have had complains that the lids are hard to clean to prevent this do not let the coffee dry out. I manage to keep it clean because I rinse out the lid as soon as I finish drinking the coffee. If you cannot do that I suggest immersing it in water for a while before cleaning. The edges of the tumbler are sharp so be careful while cleaning the insides. It is also easy to store and fits neatly in the side pockets of my backpack. I have had this product for about two and a half month and I am extremely satisfied. I give it five stars 2/27/10
note: I have had this product for six months and a film of coffee has left a brown coating on the insides of the container, not harmful and can be easily removed by some vigorous brushing using a baby bottle brush.
Customer Review: NOT HARD TO CLEAN Summary: 5 Stars
I spent lots of time reading reviews prior to buying these insulated tumblers. I weighed in on all the remarks about "goo" building up and disgusting stuff coming out and decided these people must use creamer in their coffee, or just plain not practice common sense rules of cleanliness. I drink mine black and rinse the tumbler out with hot tap water and shake it a few times immediately after each use. Then I bring it home and let it soak in dish soap and hot water overnight. I've had mine 4 months now and no issues with disgusting "gunk" coming out of the lid, etc. From my standpoint, these are a great value. I only have the stainless steel version because it is completely dishwasher safe, both lid & tumbler, however, I have only run it through the dishwasher once. I can see how the fancy colored versions would begin to chip and wear over time and look like something for the trash heap. Don't know what the dishwasher would do to the lid over time - plastic & dishwashers don't usually mix very well. The tumbler keeps my coffee hot for the commute and beyond and I have no complaints. Don't let the horror reviews about being impossible to clean prevent you from trying this one. A little common sense and soaking overnight take the coffee smell away and get it clean with little effort. Again, if you use flavored creamers or sugar, that might become another issue over time. I think the key is to get up off your chair and rinse it out as soon as the coffee's gone. How hard can that be? Hey, you need the exercise anyway!
Customer Review: Functionally The Best...Problems Over Time Summary: 3 Stars
We've had a couple of these mugs for a while now. At first, they were the greatest things ever:
1) Completely Leak Proof
2) Insulation is amazing...for both Hot and Cold
3) The button which controls the opening of the valve works really well. The ability to use one hand and your fingers to press the button to take a swig of coffee is seriously the greatest thing about this mug....
....but there in lies the problem:
1) The great technical design of the lid makes it very difficult to properly wash. Over time, especially if you're drinking alot of hot liquids, the interior of the lid will develop a bad moldy smell which passes onto your drinks. It's pretty gross. It's happened with both our mugs. We had to just throw them away after awhile because it just became unusable. We tired everything too...lemons, vinegar and baking soda...the smell, and resulting taste, just won't go away.
2) If you get a colored mug, the exterior is just paint. Over time, the paint will chip off and you're pretty mug won't be so pretty anymore...if you're worried about the looks of the mug, get the stainless steel one.
So to recap...
Mug is great at first. It's by far the best in terms of design I've used. The functionality of dispensing the liquid is great. BUT...and this is a big BUT...over time (about 8 months)...the lid just breeds mold or bacteria...because it's impossible to wash properly...and as result, you get a pretty nasty smell coming out of the lid...GROSS.
Customer Review: Great Lid; So-So Heat Retention Summary: 3 Stars
Bought these on the 4 for 3 promotion after Glenn Reynolds aka Instapundit linked to them. Glenn links to lots of good Amazon stuff and I usually immediately put what he recommends on my Amazon Wish List - if I don't just purchase outright (he writes persuasively). The fact that 600+ other purchasers have these and give it a 4.25-star avg also weighed on my decision. Two Starbucks thermos mugs that my wife and I have used for years were starting to lose their mojo. Had dropped both several times, deforming the fit of the excellent lid. So they now leak.
These Contigos have what must be the best lid I've ever seen on such a mug. Works flawlessly. No leaks. No difficulty getting a tight fit every time. But the mugs just don't keep hot drinks piping hot for very long... Says here that it "keeps beverages hot for four hours". No. They are warm at best at the 4 hour mark. Heat loss somewhere. Could be the lid. But, I'm guessing the double-wall construction. There is a crease about 2-3 of the way up on the inside of all four mugs that looks like it may be where they take it from double wall to single wall. I'm just guessing - but the seam is there. The mugs are warm to the touch in that top 1/3. Not hot - but certainly warm. Maybe they're cutting per unit costs now that they've reeled in a substantial number of happy buyers. 3 for the price of 4 is a good deal, but they don't do the job I expected.
I'd prefer to spend more on a better insulating mug. One with this one's great lid!
Customer Review: Takes ABUSE! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased just one of these mugs two years ago from this website and have been throwing it in the dishwasher (top and bottom) for the past two years. There is no smell as one reviewer recently wrote that can even be detected and I have used it both for hot and cold beverages. I drink ALOT of coffee. It keeps it the PERFECT temp for several hours, will NOT spill when turned upside down and still looks like brand new. I have dropped it on concrete, washed it in the dishwasher and thrown it in the back of my car (which has leather seats) when my cupholders are full and I need the room. It has never leaked. One previous rater stated that the cup builds up pressure when hot liquids are put in it and that is CORRECT. As soon as you fill the cup and cap it, simply push the button to vent it once and you are good. I also push the button after drinking from it so there is no liquid in the small well in the lid that can spill.
I guess after reading what other people thougt about the plastic versions I am glad I lucked out and opted for the Stainless Steel model the first time. When I purchased this mug I bought about 7 or 8 other types as well looking for the perfect coffee mug. ALL of them have been trashed except for this one, including the fancy BMW mug I bought! Now my husband wants one after using mine one time. We will be getting several more of these. I LOVE mne and can't say more than enough nice things about it!
