Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Contigo AUTOSEAL Stainless Steel Vacuum Insulated Tumbler, 16 Ounces, SilverCustomer Review: Works fantastic Summary: 5 Stars
This is truly a great product. It keeps my coffee HOT for a long time and the auto seal button feature is nice because it prevents spills. It's super easy to clean and doesn't seem to accumulate any coffee/sugar/creamer gunk in places that are impossible to clean like some other mugs I've used.
I'm assuming the double wall stainless is foam insulated between the layers. all the plastic, air-sealed products I've tried don't work worth a crap. they may be cheaper, but they are worthless and none of them have kept my coffee hot for more than about 45 minutes.
UPDATE (4/2/10):
The mug still works great, however since I almost always use it for coffee, the flavor has slightly infiltrated the lid and drinking water out of it tastes like crap. Of course, this will happen with any mug with plastic and if you try to soak it in soap then it will taste like soap. I've never really found a good solution for this since coffee penetrates almost everything. They need to sell just the top so I don't need two mugs for different beverages. For me it's really not a problem because I typically use insulated squeeze bottles for ice water.
UPDATE (10/22/10):
At this point, I've run it through its paces fully. I keep seeing reviews about the lid being the main problem because it is impossible to clean properly. After every use, I rinse the lid out thoroughly with hot water, shake it a bit and let it air dry upside down. The lid still looks as clean as it did when I got it, I really don't see the issue with cleaning at all. I am a coffee addict and I've purchased a ton of coffee mugs in my time and plenty of them had problems with the lid gunking up, but not with this one. Either some people are getting defective lids or they don't know how to clean properly.
As previously stated, the coffee smell penetrated the plastic in the lid and that is permanent. However, to date, I have not yet found a good insulated mug where this does not happen to some degree. Coffee oils will penetrate almost anything.
Customer Review: Mug Owned # 12,521.. FINALLY GOT A GOOD ONE Summary: 5 Stars
WOW. where to begin.
I have owned all sorts of mugs in all shapes and sizes.
What i was looking for:
BPA free, spill proof, dishwasher safe, at least 16 oz, and easy to clean.
Pros:
- AUTO LOCK!!?? oh yea. I have locking ones, and forget to lock them thinking 'the dogs, cats, and baby wouldnt go near it' and sure enough i knock it over
- easy to clean
+open lid design on inside
+there is NO inner lip to the metal base part. the top screws on to the metal itself and there is no buffer plastic piece. other travel mugs have this plastic piece on the metal base, that the lid screws into. it took me forever to find out this disgusting funk of a smell was coffee getting trapped UP UNDER that buffer piece. it was so disgusting i threw that old one away.
- nice price, especially cuz of the 4 for 3 deal
- looks nice
- once again, IT AUTO LOCKS!
- keeps liquids hot for darn close to 4 hours. the trick is, to pour coffee in - screw on cap - and let it SIT for 10 minutes and dont even open the top or the sip hole. the heat will create this kind of vacuum inside and super heat the walls or something. youll depress the button after 10 minutes and SPISSSSSSSSHHHH... time to drink nice hot coffee.
Cons:
- Kinda annoying there is no anti skid 'something' on the bottom. Its a smooth bottom, but im just used to having something to prevent it from sliding if on a slighttt angle (laptop table). HOWEVER this is forgiven because the base wouldnt be disherwasher safe with an anti skid piece on the bottom.
Over all WELL worth it. I actually bought 3 of them in the 4 for 3 deal on amazon.
This is by far the best coffee travel mug i have used out of the many, many many i have gone thru.
im going on 3 hours now and my coffee is still hot in my mug.
hope this helped someone.
just give this a try.. you wont be disappointed.
Customer Review: Best mug around Summary: 5 Stars
I've owned/was given quite a few mugs and thermos containers as well. This qulifies as the best:
+ Absolutely tight seal. It will not spill no matter what. Period.
+ Extremely durable and resistant : one of the goals of the mug was to withstand trips with kids, being tossed in a full bag, etc. This mug is built like a tank, nothing will spill out, it can fall on the concrete pavement without opening either. besides having a short thread (very easy to twist in/out), the seal is very tight and the cap will not go away! Also, our mugs have fallen multiple times on the ground: the steel is unaffected and the top cap has a few minor dents. All in all, this item is wearing off very well considering the abuse.
+ Very friendly plastic used in the cap mechanism. I just read another reviewer experienced the bad smell syndrom. I was afraid of that considering I use the mug primarily for lattes...Howerver, I found the cap assembly to be perfect and it washes quite nicely in the top rack of the dishwasher. No old-milk smells, nothing left behind at all. This is the first mug I've owned that does not leave any milk residues behind so I am very happy about that, as I'm quite sensitive about odd smells.
+ Design has clean lines and the materials used are high quality. The soft rubber on the cap is soft offers a lot of grip. The very top is made of a hard plastic which is perfect when your mug falls on a hard surface
Some cons
- In the case of hot beverages, be careful when you press the button to drink, the heat buildup will make the liquid spurt out a little if you press it all the way. This usually happens only the first time after I poured the liquid and secured the cap
- Searching but nothing else.???
Conclusion
The best in its class if you ask me. Expensive but responds to the "rigors" of a busy couple with kids
Customer Review: Really good tumbler, but some flaws.... Summary: 4 Stars
I've accumulated a lot of tumblers over the years (free and purchased), and this is the best one I own.
Pros:
1. Insulated - I know this is one of the big selling points, but I just want to re-emphasize it. I own a sports car with fairly stiff suspension, and every day I have to contend with speed bumps at work. Some of my tumblers spit and spill even when the stopper is closed, getting all over the place. Not with the Contigo. Plus, you can toss it in your messenger bag, no worries.
2. Cool to the touch.
3. Pretty cool looking, if you care what your tumbler looks like... Personally, I don't really care, but I thought I'd include this as a pro anyways.
Cons:
1. The way the sipper top works, you have no idea how hot the liquid is before you take a sip. When I first used this tumbler, I had a couple incidents of burnt tongue. I've just resigned to the fact I have to wait for the liquid to cool enough to start drinking... In some of my other cups, the top has a big lip where the liquid pours into first, and you can cool it a bit.
2. The first con is the only real problem I have with the mug... However, here are a couple annoyances that weren't important enough to factor into my actual rating: the mug is advertised to hold 16 oz. And it does, but it will fill it to the absolute top. The problem here is, this won't work once you put the lid on. If you fill it as high as possible, taking into consideration the top, you lose a couple ounces. Not a biggee, but there ya go. Also, you have to hit a button every time you sip due to it being insulated. Again, not a biggee, just a nit, and really something you have to live with for the insulation.
Overall, great mug... in retrospect, I'm not sure it's worth $20, but I still like it.
Customer Review: Sometimes perfect takes a little work. Summary: 5 Stars
This is in fact the best coffee mug I have ever owned. I've had my Contigo mug for about a year and a half and still don't have any problems, it doesn't leak and it keeps my coffee hot for quite a while.
I ride my motorcycle to work a lot when the weather is fair and enjoy the convenience of being able to throw it in my bag and not worry if I'm going to have a coffee stain across my back when I get to work.
As many other reviewers have noted the lid for this mug can be difficult to clean and can build up some nasty gunk if it isn't cleaned regularly, especially if you put cream or sugar in your coffee. I have a few tips for cleaning it I'd like to share.
Note: most of these involve putting hot water in the mug and then sealing it and shaking it, this will cause steam to build up in the mug, please use caution when opening the mug, you can push the button to release the pressure before cleaning.
1. Fill the mug about 1/3 full of hot water and add 2-3 tbsp of vinegar, put the lid on and shake it vigorously for about a minute, open the lid and see if there is anything floating around in the water, if there is repeat this step until there isn't. After rinsing with vinegar rinse once with hot water, this will get any smell out.
2. I have a bottle (as in baby bottle) brush that I use for cleaning this mug and my water bottle, the nipple brush is particularly useful.
3. If needed I will put something abrasive like coarse salt and enough water to cover the salt (but not dissolve it all) and allow it to be fluid and then seal and shake.
It takes a little extra work every now and again, but isn't too bad if you just rinse it out with hot water when you get home but I would buy the same product again.
