Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Columbian Home 0707-1 Granite Ware 21-1/2-Quart Steel/Porcelain Water-Bath Canner with RackCustomer Review: You don't need one Summary: 1 Stars
I'm a beginner canner and have been looking into the different supplies needed- including a water bath system. After reading the reviews on this product I went to a local store and checked them out. The negative reviews were confirmed- these are very flimsy and cheap, even the one I was looking at was all dinged up and damaged. I went home and looked into it and it turns out you can use any large pot for water bath canning so long as you have something between the bottom of the pot and the glass jars (connecting some canning bands together seems to be the cheapest and easiest option). Although you miss out on having a rack that you can elevate and rest on the pot- I don't think I'd trust this cheap rack to elevate seven quart jars anyways. I thought this information might be helpful to anyone who doesn't have a lot of extra storage space for a really big pot but wants to start canning, like me!
Customer Review: Great for making Stocks & Soups Summary: 4 Stars
I can't honestly say if this pot is good for canning. I have a flat electric cooking top and the bottom of this pot is concave so I can't use it for canning, I can however use it for making stocks and soups. It is perfect for this application use. I usually check my soup/stock every 15 minutes to give a stir or poke and have had no problems on my flat cook top. I did however have problems with using it on the electric coil type stoves. Because of the bottom, it gets a hot ring from the actual coil so anything that stays there can get burned unless you are constantly moving it. The electric coil doesn't create enough even heat for this pot. Perhaps if all you were heating up was just a liquid it would work.
Either or, for my use and my stove it is great and it looks good sitting on top of my cabinets. A real focal point.
Customer Review: Great piece of equipment, great price Summary: 5 Stars
I debated purchasing a canner until I tried using one of my stockpots. What a pain. I don't think there's a stockpot out there that can hold more than three or four quart jars -- unless you get a gigantic restaurant-sized one that costs an arm and a leg.
That said, this is NOT a stockpot, so don't expect to make batches of soup (though you could get away with it, I suppose). This is for water baths for canning. It is just thick enough to not warp, but if you DO cook somthing in this, you should expect to pay a lot of attention to the food so it doesn't scorch on the bottom. This is a quality product for its intended purpose and was worth every penny I spent (around $20). In fact, it's actually worth every penny of its retail price. It'll last for years.
Customer Review: Great buy!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I'm new at home canning, and wasn't sure what to buy. This canner is just what I needed. It's huge, and works great. The fact that it came with the canning rack was a real bonus. With the rack, you just lift it up and hang the handles over the edge of the pot, load you jars in, and then lower them all in the boiling water at the same time. No getting burned from the steam. And, when it's time to remove the jars, you just lift the rack back up, hang it over the edge again, and take the jars out (be sure to use potholders, of course, when lifting the rack in and out of the pot). I am really impressed with the quality, too. The price was a real bonus with this one as well. Excellent value!
Customer Review: Great! Summary: 5 Stars
Love it! Perfect size to can 7 quarts tomatos or fruit. Easy lift basket gets cans out safely. Make sure you buy an additional canning tool set that comes with a magnetic lid lifter, the tongs to remove the hot jars from the canner, and a plastic stick to stir out bubbles before you place lid. (advice from Mom-aka:Professional Canner) I am an amateur at this so I took my time. Every jar sealed! Tried Walmarts, Target, and every local hardware to find a canner. Don't waste your time and gas $$$!! Order from the net. Actually far cheaper with free shipping than searching your 30 mile radius.
