I just recently began learning how to cook (I am 41 years old), and realized that I could not find my old book holder anywhere in my house. =(
I searched here on Amazon, compared many different holders, read the reviews for this one and ordered it.
No joke, this is truly the BEST book holder I could have hoped to purchase!
The base is made out of heavy wood (description states "cherrywood") which makes it sturdy and stays where you place it.
The two (2) pieces of acrylic work by placing the smaller piece into one of the slits in the base (the thickness of your book/magazine), then laying the larger piece connected with hinges onto your book/magazine so it covers it. The cover piece folds forward so you can easily flip the page(s) when needed.
I have not had to clean it yet, but it seems easy enough to do so as you really only need to clean the cover piece.
Since it folds totally flat, I store it on the same bookshelf as all of our cookbooks.
I highly recommend this product for anyone who wishes to protect reading material from being damaged by food splatters, or for anyone who likes to prop their book up (instead of holding it in their hands) while they read.
If someone were to give this to me as a gift, I would be very appreciative and I definitely will consider doing so for others.

Previously I had one of those clear acrylic holders that acts like a sandwich, where you put the open book in between two sticking up parts of the acrylic. It worked fine, but you had to be careful when removing thick books, since it could damage the book. I gave it away so decided to upgrade when getting another. I upgraded to this one, and for anyone who can afford to upgrade, I think this jumbo size holder is worth it. You actually have some control over the degree the book leans back, and it's very sturdy. I can't see that this one could damage a cookbook in any way. I just got it so don't know if it'll last, but it looks well made and sturdy. I just bought Mastering the Art of French Cooking, so I immediately tried out my new book in my new holder, and voila, a perfect fit. It came packaged carefully, so no scratches or bending of the acrylic. This is a good useable addition to anyone's kitchen. I love it. (But if you can't afford this jumbo one, the acrylic sandwich-type works well enough.)Customer Review: Finally, my search has ended!

Like in the movie GROUNDHOG DAY, this has been one of those items that I have bought over and over and trying to get it right. Buying THIS one has been the charm. Don't let the cost hold you back, it is not too much to spend when you consider you will save money b/c you won't have to keep buying multiples! As others have said, it is attractive and solid, the acrylic cover is huge--covers the entire spread of a large open book--and regardless of girth or dimensions of your book, the book remains stationed right where you put it--no flopping issues! The box it comes in is attractive enough to give as a gift. Comes with a notepaper that suggests acrylic cleaners to use when you might need to spruce it up. They've thought of everything. A quality item.

I don't know what I can say about this that everyone else hasn't said - this holder is wonderful! It's beautiful and looks great on my kitchen island, and it holds everything I throw at it, from one printed-out page, to my fattest, biggest cookbook.
I keep it out all the time, but I love the way that it folds flat for storage, too.
Before I bought this I was using a cheapie lightweight plastic holder that just didn't work for the majority of my cookbooks; when this came, I was pleasantly surprised by how sturdy and well-made it is.
I can't imagine cooking without it anymore; a bit more expensive than some others, but worth every penny!

This cookbook holder is recommended by Cook's Illustrated, who noted in their review that there is a surprising number of cookbook holders which don't hold most/many sizes of cookbooks. This one does. It holds big books and single sheets of paper. It's design allows you to (extremely easily) adjust it to fit your size of book. I can't imagine a cookbook that would not fit in this...if you can lift it, it will fit. And it's easy to read from. It is also attractive with the wooden base. It is rather expensive, so if you can find one that works for less, I would go for it. But if you don't want to spend the time doing so or haven't been successful yet, go for this one!
