Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 3-Inch Paring KnifeCustomer Review: Not Forged Summary: 1 Stars
This is not a Walnut Traditions knife, which is forged. It is instead a Walnut Signature knife, which is stamped. Amazon even acknowledges this in the Product Details section of the webpage for this knife. There it is described as a Walnut Signature Knife. Amazon has known about this misidentification since S. Kinsey's review of 4/6/08, but they have not changed the top description. That's deceptive advertising!
I have a Walnut Traditions 3-inch paring knife that came with the set I purchased from Amazon. The tip was broken off when I tried to use it as a screwdriver. (Never do that!) I've been trying to purchase a replacement for months. This is NOT it. The quality difference is quite noticeable. Even the 3-inch Walnut Traditions Paring-Boning Knife Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 3-Inch Paring/Boning Knife is not a substitute. It's much more of a boner than a parer. And it's not built like the other Walnut Tradition knives, with a curved steel bolster integral with the blade where it meets the wood handle. That's a much safe construction.
I have one more complaint. It's about the packaging. This knife is 7 inches long, folks. It came on a bubble wrapped card that added 2 inches. Then it was placed inside a 12 inch long corrugated box, which was placed inside an 18 inch long corrugated box! Talk about a waste of resources! The card with the knife could have been safely shipped in a padded envelope. Then we come to the bubble wrapped card. Don't you love those things? It took me, 10 minutes to cut the card apart with a serrated fish gutting knife. How much could Amazon save by purchasing its products in plain wrappings and how much that would endear them to their customers? Bubble wrapped cards are meant for the in-person retail experience. But Amazon is NOT an in-person retailer. It's the equivalent of a catalog retailer. Smart catalog retailers ship their merchandise in the simplest, easiest to open packaging.
It would have been silly to send back an $8.00 item. I complained and got a credit on my next order. I'll see how this knife works. If need be I'll go looking for the Knife-I-Want someplace other than Amazon. And because I doubt that Amazon will put this up on their website, if they do and you are the first email I receive in response, I'll send you the dollar amount of the credit they gave me on this order.
