Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 10-Inch Serrated Bread/Slicing Knife

Customer Review: cuts crooked
Summary: 2 Stars

The title says it all. I have another bread knife and it cuts straight. I have used other bread knives and they cut straight. This bread knife is nice and sharp but it wants to cut a wedge, such that the bottom of the slice is way thicker than the top. I figure the other knives that have know problem pretty much rules out operator error. For me a cheap price for a cooked cutting knife is not a redeeming quality. I guess its better than an expensive crooked cutting knife though. Either one requires the same amount of hassle to repackage and return. Onther note, in my research for the perfect knife I have found allot of preference for a 10" blade. IMO an 8" blade is fine for a loaf up to 8"wide. And another One other note, I was disappointed to see it arrive in a box that could have easily fit 50 of these knives. (about 16"X12"X8") Very wasteful for my green sensibilities. The packaging is not the fault of the knife of course. The product was from Amazon.

Customer Review: Needed a Bread Knife to go with my new Bread Machine
Summary: 5 Stars

When I decided to purchase a bread machine for home use, I knew I'd need a good quality bread knife and slice rack to go with it. I Googled up Chicago Cutlery Bread Knife, since their utility knife, I'd received as a gift, was such a great example of the quality knife I wanted. Sure enough, the top of the list was the Amazon 10 Inch Serrated Bread/Slicing Knife by Chicago Cutlery. I've sliced up over three dozen loaves since Thanksgiving, and it works perfectly. It is sharp, came wrapped like it was a Ming Vase, and impressed the heck out of my husband, who uses it more than I do. I've read the other reviews and I find the length, weight, balance and scallops work well for slicing any style loaves. Hard crusts need a slightly slower, even handed slicing motion.

Customer Review: Decent knife for the price.
Summary: 3 Stars

The quality of this knife is good for the amount of jack. This knife will tackle any soft breads and cakes with ease. The one problem that I have run into with this knife however, is that the widley spaced teeth can be troublesome when cutting hard crusty breads. Since the teeth are widley spaced, it is prone to skipping if you are not careful. In short, skipping knife blade = sliced fingers. This is problematic to me since most of the bread I bake is rustic/french style bread. In all fairness, this knife has multiple purposes, but if you are looking for a good knife to cut those lovely baguettes you've been laboring over so insatiably, go with something with smaller teeth.

Customer Review: Wonderful Bread Knife
Summary: 5 Stars

The 10-Inch Serrated Bread/Slicing Knife made by Chicago cutlery is very sharp and must be used carefully. Some reviews have complained about how easy it is to cut yourself. This is a KNIFE. BE CAREFUL WITH KNIVES.
That said, it is extremely easy to slice bread as thin as you want it. I have a Toastmaster toaster from the late 1940's that insists on thin sliced bread. (A wedding present to my parents) This knife works great for slicing homemade bread to make wonderful toast. It works with freshly made bread, hot from the oven and just as well with bread softened from being stored in a plastic bag for 3 days. This a wonderful knife for the price.

Customer Review: The best thing since sliced bread.
Summary: 5 Stars

First off... be sure your knife block can handle the 10" blade. I had to remove my sharpener (honing steel) in order to fit it in the block. No big deal, but it may be to some. Measure it out, first.

Other than that, the knife is GREAT! I like the feel of the walnut handle, which is nice in an age of plastic handles.

The teeth are spaced a LITTLE wider than my last bread knife, but I don't think it cuts differently. Either way, this knife cuts through even the toughest 3 day-old ciabatta crust with ease.

Don't overspend on your bread knife; if taken care of this will last your lifetime.
