Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chicago Cutlery Walnut Signature 5-1/2-Inch Utility Knife

Customer Review: A decent starter knife (if you can get it at the right price)
Summary: 3 Stars

If you are frustrated with using crappy knives this is a great one to start with; it has a sharp blade, the handle is very ergonomic, the blade is strong and I don't feel it will break while trying to pry open a particularly hard fruit or vegetable (unlike some fancier knives I've tried).

Please be careful while opening the blister pack, I cut myself trying to unpack the knife!

This is my general use (but not sharpest) knife and it gets used all the time, also it did not cost much so I'm not too concerned about being careful with it. I've had it for about 2 years and it has maintained the original edge, with just a few chips from either dropping it or putting it in the dishwasher.

Regarding the complaint that the handle is dry, this is especially true if you put your knife in the dishwasher - the handle will be really dry when it comes out but is easy to rectify. Just rub a few drops vegetable or mineral oil on it regularly and it will smoothen out over time.

Overall, this is a great starter knife if you can get it at the right price (more on this below) and will last you many years if you hand wash it and hone the edge from time to time. The matching Walnut sharpening steel has worked fine for me.

Regarding the current price, when I bought this knife it was less than ten dollars (in 2008), now it's listed at almost twice that price. At this higher price I don't see it as being a very good value. Other options you can consider (as of Nov 2010) are:

Chicago Cutlery Metropolitan 5-1/2-Inch Utility Knife - this is the same knife with a black handle and a slightly better price

Chicago Cutlery 1040698 5-Inch Utility Knife - mostly similar knife, the handle is not as ergonomic and much better priced

Kershaw Precision Forged Stainless Steel 5-1/2-Inch Utility Knife - Slightly higher priced but a forged knife

Mercer Cutlery Genesis 5-Inch Utility Knife - Also a forged knife in the $25 range

Description of Chicago Cutlery Walnut Signature 5-1/2-Inch Utility Knife

Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition 5-1/2-Inch Utility Knife includes 1-Each 5-1/2-Inch utility knife.Chicago Cutlery Walnut Tradition collection features the classic styling of beautiful wood handles. Our exclusive Taper Grind? edge technology stays sharper longer and is easy to resharpen. High-carbon stainless steel blades resist stains and rust for lasting beauty. Triple compression brass rivets hold the handles securely to blade for safety and stability.
A true kitchen multi-tasker, this handy little 5-1/2-inch knife is perfect for cutting sandwiches, slicing small cuts of meat, paring fruits, and other small- to medium-scaled cutting jobs that don?t require a more specialized blade. As a part of Chicago Cutlery?s Walnut Tradition line of cutlery, it combines high performance with excellent value. Stamped rather than forged for lighter weight and a more reasonable price, the blade is made from high-carbon, 420 stainless steel with carbon to keep edges sharper longer and chromium to resist rust and stains, while Chicago?s exclusive Taper Grind edge produces impressively precise slices and retains its sharpness well over time. A full tang extends from the tip of the knife to the end of the handle for improved balance and strength. A comfortable walnut handle offers the rich warmth of wood and a classic look; it?s securely held to the blade with triple-compression brass rivets for added safety and stability. Chicago Cutlery covers their knives with a lifetime guarantee; they recommend hand-washing and drying for best results. --Mary Park
