Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chef'n Lab 921 Dual GrinderCustomer Review: Works great, if you clean it properly Summary: 5 Stars
I have had this item for several years now, and I really love it! I like the fact that you can adjust the grinders to output coarse to fine. And it seems really robust to me! I was very surprised to see reports of the handle breaking...with mine, there is hardly any strain on the handles when using.
Regarding the reviewers who say that very little material comes out, the most likely problem that you might encounter is buildup of wet salt after several months. Since salt is hygroscopic (meaning it absorbs water from the air), if you have very much humidity around, there can be a buildup of wet salt "dust" in the grinding ridges. I live on a boat (a damp environment), so this happened to mine in a very bad way, to the point where it was impossible to get any salt out (although pepper output was still fine). The solution is pretty simple: clean the thing out with a bit of warm water, and also manually scrape the built-up debris from the grinding ridges (which you can see protruding out the bottom when you depress the handle); then dry the thing very well before putting salt back in (I put mine in front of a space heater for a couple hours). In humid environments, I think it can also be helpful to include some water-absorbing material in with your salt ... just in the same way many people put uncooked rice in a salt shaker. This time I am going to try some grains of cous-cous instead of rice, which ought to absorb moisture pretty well, but will not be as hard on the grinder as rice grains.
To get optimal performance, I imagine you might have to clean it about once a year.
Description of Chef'n Lab 921 Dual GrinderSalt and Pepper Grinder For some of us, salt-and-pepper shakers just don't cut it. We need grinders, so we can shred our spices fresh and know for certain that the pepper in our cabinet hasn't been sitting in ground form for years. That's why the Chef 'n Lab 921 dual grinder is such a revelation, as it not only looks stylish, but it lets you grind both salt and pepper in the same device. Merely twist the soft SavvyGrip handles to "P" for pepper or "S" for salt. When fully filled with medley peppercorns and coarse sea salt, the grinder modestly produces great-tasting spices for your palatable pleasure. It even comes with GrindTune levers, so you can adjust the coarseness of the salt and pepper. --Rivers Janssen
