Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chef'n Grapefruiter Citrus Sectioning ToolCustomer Review: Clever Essential Tool Summary: 5 Stars
I bought mine at my local gourmet shop, where I had also purchased a [ASIN:B00004SGFD KitchenAid JE Citrus Juicer Stand Mixer Attachment]] for my Kitchenaid Mixer. The little tool laid patiently in the drawer waiting for a opportunity to work whilst the juicer got all the jobs.
Then, I decided to make a grapefruit cake, and I needed grapefruit sections as well as juice. I was just reaching for a knife when I remembered the little tool sitting in the drawer.
The first piece did not have much meat, but then I adjusted where I was putting it, and it came out with a perfect section, with no peel. The rest of the grapefruit was a snap! The little tool became a favorite, and I looked for opportunities to use it.
Later that year, my friend asked me to make the same cake, but at her house. I didn't have my trusty tool, so I bought jarred grapefruit sections. They don't taste as good as fresh grapefruit, but I knew I would never get nice looking sections without the little tool.
I have read some of the negative reviews, and I must say I have never had a problem with my grapefruit sectioner thingy, and that it makes perfect sections every time.
Customer Review: It Broke!!!!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
I paid about $10.00 at a local store and had it for 2 days....I used it only on Texas Grapefruit (which are very large) and after a little practice it worked with no waste at all!!! I had decided that the bad reviews were possibly "user's error" as stated previously. It was my new favorite gadget -since I pack my husband a half grapefruit almost every morning for breakfast. When it broke (believe me, I wasn't rough with it, or forcing anything) I was really surprised. I just assumed that maybe a spring came loose or something. But no! It was made with brittle cheap plastic inside, which (of course) was designed to break. Too many things are engineered to break today, so we will (like zombies) return and re-buy, over and over.......
I'm contemplating on returning it for a replacement instead of a refund. (I loved it that much). With that *plan* the gasoline trip every 2 days could make this really expensive! However -I really want to teach the cheap-scape's (who manufactured this wonderful design with faulty materials) a lesson. If we all kept forcing the goods back to them and replacing instead of re-buying....I wonder if we could change things.
Customer Review: works great Summary: 5 Stars
I use the chef'n tool one or two times a day and it is quick and sharp. I read the 1 star reviews and they said it left part of the fruit behind which is true. But you can minimize the lost fruit by plunging the tool straight down keeping the tip of V the blade as close to the center as possible and then angeling the moving blade part of the tool to line up with the outside edge.
I had the Orka Grapefruit Cutter prior to the chef'n tool and it got more of the fruit, but also more of the peel which I didn't like and the Orka also took longer to core the grapefruit.
My first chef'n tool lasted about 3 years, and I just bought another one. I am trying to keep it cleaner so the sticky dried grape fruit juice doesn't wear out the mechanism as quickly. I also lightly spray the mechanism monthly with PAM to keep it moving freely. (I may try throwing it in the dishwasher)
I don't work for chef'n. I am not being paid for this review. But I do like grapefruit and anyone else who does should try the chef'n tool.
Customer Review: Works very well Summary: 5 Stars
I am shopping here at Amazon because Fred Meyer no longer carries this item. I have owned two in the past four years and they eventually break, unfortunately. I don't understand how anybody can give it a negative review, it works so well. One reviewer said that it is great, but doesn't work so well on large fruits. This is true, but nothing really does work on large fruits except the manual method. Perfection is just not attainable, but I would like to know what the Texans keep, because most all the fruits I buy are exported from Texas (I live in Idaho), and they are average sized. Which is what this tool was designed for. NASA might be able to make a sectioner that would work on a "Texas sized fruit" but we would all pay the price for that. In the meantime, you can use this handy tool to section two average-sized grapefruit halves in under 45 seconds. A little practice and none of these negative reviews would be here. I use mine every. single. day. Until it breaks and then I go to the only place where I am sure I can replace it. Which isn't Fred Meyer.
Customer Review: Works Pretty Slick Summary: 4 Stars
I've been using this for a few months now and I love it. I buy a lot of citrus and this little gadget is oh so much better than trying to do it the old fashioned way. Takes a little bit of a learning curve to get the hang of it and I would like to see better instructions, but the video on the website helps. This works OK with oranges as well if you don't mind pulling 2 sections at a time instead of one. As for leftover fruit in the shell, what's the big deal? Just squeeze it over your bowl for the good juice and there is no waste.
What I would like to see is better construction though. I'm not sure this is going to hold up very well over time. I use it almost everyday and it is a little hard to clean and not overly well put together.
