Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm Set

Customer Review: Nice product - doesn't work through brick/plaster, though.
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased this item to protect my freezer, which is located in my garage - this is about 50 feet from the area where I wanted to place the receiver. Although the description made it seem as if the transmitter would work from that distance, it did not work when the receiver was placed in my kitchen - we kept getting error messages and had to move the transmitter to just beside the exterior door in order for readings to be taken (a distance of about 20 feet). We've also noticed that the thermometer has trouble taking readings when the signal has to go through brick or plaster, as well.

The thermometer updates fairly infrequently, so if you open the freezer door and the temperature rises, you have to be patient in waiting for another reading to be taken.

Customer Review: Works like a charm!
Summary: 5 Stars

Was shipped and received 2 days before the estimated arrival date! Had a little trouble when I first set it up. I put one sensor in our kitchen freezer and one in the freezer in our garage. The sensor in the garage keeps giving an error message. All the batteries I had when I received it were a little old, so I went and bought some new ones. Since I put the new batteries in I haven't had one single issue.
It says to use lithium but i just used regular alkaline and they work just fine. The sensor has set off the alarm a few times when the door is cracked open which is EXACTLY what I wanted!
Would recommend this to anyone that doesn't wanna go through the experience of losing a entire freezer full of meat like we did before we bought this product!

Customer Review: works well with no other wireless devices near
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a good product but if you have other wireless devices like baby monitor or wireless router you will lose your connection quite often. I use this for my kegerator that I have about 2 feet from the mounted receiver. It will only work when I have all other devices off. Even after changing channels of the monitor / router it only holds connection for a day or so then you have to reconnect.
Perhaps I am missing something but the directions are extremely limited and there doesn't seem to be any frequency listing on the device to help isolating the interference.
I have the freezer sensor right next to the kegerator with a lithium battery and it also doesn't stay connected for more than a day or so before I get the two dashes on the receiver.

Customer Review: Nifty but scary
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a French door refrigerator with a bottom freezer (two drawer). I have one of the probes in the refrigerator and the other in my bottom freezer drawer. The display is on the side of the unit on the outside. I am totally obsessive about maintaining the correct temperature in my coolers and just love the fact that I can see both temperatures without opening the doors. The scary part is to see how much these temperatures fluctuate and how much the temperature rises if I keep the door open for more than a few seconds. In addition to showing me the temperatures this unit is making me much more careful not to keep the doors open. This thermometer does everything I expected and everything I wanted and I recommend it without reservations

Customer Review: Best Available, but Needs Improvement
Summary: 4 Stars

I had a hard time getting the unit to sync up, but I got it to work by placing the thermometer inside the frige door and then placing the receiver right over top of it from the outside. Then it registered. Did the same for the freezer. Now it works fine. Kenmore. I'm not sure it's accurate though because my bottom mount freezer gets up to 15 degrees at night. Wierd.

Be nice if the wireless was stronger. Sounds crazy, but I wouldn't mind monitoring it from online. The alarm isn't going to help you much if you're not there the day the frige goes bad.

As of 9-21-09 the freezer remote stopped working. I tried every type of battery except lithium. I'm waiting for the lithium batteries to arrive.
