Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Chaney Instrument 00985 Wireless Refrigerator Freezer Thermometer Alarm SetCustomer Review: A total dud Summary: 1 Stars
When I first got this item, I put the batteries in and left all 3 parts together at room temp along with a device that I use to monitor indoor and outdoor temps.
After a few hours, the Chaney read 2 degrees higher on channel two and 7 degrees higher on channel one. Already not good as far as accuracy, but I thought I'd just use it anyway.
I put the probes in fridge and freezer but they couldn't communicate with the base. The device I use to wirelessly monitor outdoor temps worked fine not only through the fridge and freezer doors, but 50 feet away.
So I put the base in the fridge and figured I'd just have to check it manually.
Two weeks later and the display is blank. Already printed out my return label.
Judging from how many people have rated this item, lots of people want to monitor their fridge and freezer. Any entrepreneurs out there that can make one that actually works consistently? You'll make a killing.
Customer Review: Eats Batterys like candy Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this to keep an eye on my deep freeze in the garage. It is on a GFI outlet because the Wise Ones make all external outlets part of a GFI circuit. Sometimes the GFI pops and I really want to know that the deep freeze is still cycling.
I put Duracell's in the receiver. Lithium's went in the transmitters like they suggested. The device had to be reset many times and then after about 3 weeks all the batteries died. Well, I tried another set hoping that it was just a weak set. Silly me. Same thing. After about 3 weeks and a few resets by popping out the batteries resulted in dead batteries, again. I give up. The range on the refrigerator was fine - it was stuck to the refrigerator door. The deep freeze was about 10 feet away through the wall. When the batteries were in tip top shape it worked. I don't think I will try another set of batteries. I'm giving this two stars instead of one because it did work, for a while.
Customer Review: Poor quality, does not work, manual incomplete. Summary: 1 Stars
This item shipped quickly, and looks like a good product from the information on Amazon. However, I was never able to get the refrigerator sensor to work, and the freezer sensor was intermittent at best. All I would get was "-E-" in the display. Resetting and taking the batteries out worked for a couple hours at the most. The manual doesn't mention this error, so I had no idea what the problem was, so I ended up having to return the item. Replaced the batteries, tried over and over to re-locate the sensors and display, nothing worked. Even with the sensor and display less than 3 inches from each other it didn't work, so I don't buy the idea that they were out of range. I literally tried setting the refrigerator sensor right next to the display unit and it still didn't work. Every morning when I checked it, all I saw was -E-.. I also had serious questions about it's accuracy. Basically a cheap piece of junk.
Customer Review: Not very accurate, but good enough to avert disaster Summary: 3 Stars
Like some of the other reviewers, I also have kids; and after losing a heartbreaking amount of food to open doors, I decided I had to have some sort of alarms. I have two freezers in the garage, so I figured I had to give these a try in spite of the negative reviews.
The sensors are not very accurate. I have THREE refrigerator/freezer thermometers that I use to monitor my fridges and freezers. All of them agree my freezers are running at zero degrees. Both remote sensors register +10 degrees. A couple of times, already, the alarms have gone off when I went into the freezers for more than a couple of seconds.
On the other hand, the range is good. My freezers are in the garage and the receiver is about 40' and 2 walls away.
If you want accurate readings, move on. If all you want is to avert disaster, these work at a reasonable price.
Customer Review: Good Product - Can Save You Money!!! Summary: 5 Stars
We had a problem - kids leaving the freezer door open. Twice we had to throw out almost everything in the freezer.
I have owned this for over a year now and no more problem. I put one sensor in my kitchen freezer and one in my basement freezer. I did have to find a good place to put the main unit so it could read both sensors - the range is only about 25 feet or so at most! I still have not replaced the batteries in the sensors, although I think I will soon. I have replaced the batteries in the main unit twice now. They recommend lithium batteries for the sensor units, but I put regular alkalines in and they work okay. The setup of the unit is just a bit tricky, but the instructions are pretty good - I had it set up in just a few minutes.
If you have a similar problem that I had, I would definitely recommend this product!
