These make great and healthy treats for cats. All three of our cats go nuts over these flakes. You can buy bonito flakes for less as human food (they are used to make stock for soups like miso), but in my experience the human-food flakes are small and crushed up. The cats seem to enjoy the bigger flakes that come in the Cat-Man-Doo more than smaller flakes. The bottom of the Cat-Man-Doo container is never as exciting to them as the top. The container itself keeps the flakes sealed and fresh. There isn't any fishy smell until you actually open the container and give some to your kitties.
It takes some cats a few times to figure out these are for eating, perhaps because of the flake texture. If your cat doesn't take to them right away, you can try putting some on or in their food or playing with one of the flakes so they pounce. Once tasted, the confused kitty gets that these are food and wants more.
