I've just begun to compose myself after the events of Halloween circa 2008. If only I had paid more attention...
This costume is clearly meant for a short-haired dachshund, and Sgt. PuppyGums was just the dog to wear it. And before you ask, he attained the rank of Sgt. after making it through a rigorous puppy boot camp at the local PetSmart.
Like many families, the Gr33n4blu3 family has a Halloween tradition of its own. Starting at noon we adorn ourselves with costumes and parade around the neighborhood in giddy anticipation of the candy collecting ritual that will begin the moment the sun goes down. As part of the tradition we must eat every piece of candy we collect by sunrise - it's not easy, and like all family traditions it involves discomfort, pain, and at least one emergency trip to the bathroom.
In order to get our stomachs ready for an evening of sugary gorging and the hike around the neighborhood, we have a barbeque early in the day, usually around 11:00 am. The entire gang gets together - in costume - and we drink and eat as though it were the end of the world. Uncle Eddie mans the grill, usually with a six-pack of cold beer in hand and in stomach. We grill hamburgers, corn, beef brisket, and, yes, hotdogs. I think you see where this is going... the emotions are still raw...
Well, that year, Sgt. PuppyGums was particularly excited to take part in our barbeque - he loves hotdogs, and the costume must have inspired him because he was running all over the place, barking and carrying on like he didn't have a care in the world. We laughed at the irony of giving him a bite of hotdog while he was wearing the costume. Sgt. PuppyGums was so excited that his tail was wagging so fast that I thought he was going to take off like some sort of miniature helicopter. Unfortunately Uncle Eddie was so drunk that year that he didn't even notice Sgt. PuppyGums was wearing a costume...
And then it happened... and our world was never the same.
Yes, Sgt. PuppyGums jumped up at a hotdog that was precariously perched on the edge of the grill... his small body slammed into the lid of the grill... and knocked it over setting our deck on fire. The entire house went up in flames shortly afterwards... all that we have left in this world is that damn dog.
