Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Casa Moda "S'mores" MakerCustomer Review: A complete and utter FAILURE! Summary: 1 Stars
Okay, maybe I'm just incompetent, but trying to use this thing has been one fiasco after another. My kids had been begging for smores (although they hardly know what they are), and we don't have a fireplace. We tried the toaster over and the back patio grill, but it wasn't very satisfying. I saw this thing on sale at a department store after Christmas and thought it would be perfect... WRONG!The first problem was it requires "chaffing fuel"-- not included. Department stores doen't carry it. Searching for it on amazon gives you obscure catalogs. I finally found an online restaurant supply site to order some from, and told my disappointed kids they'd have to wait until it arrived. I've since been told I should have just picked up a can of sterno for it, but I hadn't seen that readily available either and one reviewer here said you weren't supposed to cook food directly over sterno. So, "chaffing fuel" finally arrives and we happily announce a smore party. Pulling the fuel cans out of the box, we discover they are too big to fit in the little container that sets in the grill. We try putting it in the little grill without the container, and the flame straight on the grill immediately blackens and bends the tin grill top. We discard the grill top and try roasting marshmellow directly over the #$%%@! chaffing fuel and end up with blackened flaming marshmellows that the kids won't touch. All the while the kids are also complaining because our smore maker came with two blue skewers instead of one each of different colors, and the cheap little colored plastic parts keep coming loose from the skewers and won't stay in place. Disgusted with the blackened marshmellows, my 7-year-old tries skewering her chocolate instead and ends up puncturing her palm. The party is abandoned as we scramble to get ice packs for my wailing daughter, and the dog ends up snatching the remaining graham crackers. The whole kit is being dumped in the give-to-goodwill pile. Either do it the real way, or buy the cereal...
Description of Casa Moda "S'mores" MakerSet Includes: S'More Maker Grill. Snuffer. Burner Handle. Burner Holder. Chocolate Bar Holder. 2 Marshmallow Holders. Lazy Susan Base. Marshmallow Roasting Forks. Prepackaged 2.6 oz. canned chafing fuel sold separately. Diehard s?mores fans will take year-round pleasure in this indoor/outdoor Casa Moda s?mores maker. Though it doesn?t have quite the cachet of a bonfire, the tidy little unit does have everything necessary to cooking and compiling s?mores ingredients. The centerpiece of the appliance is the 5-1/4-by-5-1/2-inch marshmallow-roasting grill, which runs on a 2-6-ounce can of chafing fuel, such as Sterno (chafing fuel not included). The grill includes a burner for the fuel, as well as a handle and a snuffer to extinguish the flame. A lazy susan base holds the grill as well as the thick white ceramic containers for the graham crackers, chocolate bars, and marshmallows. Casa Moda also includes four roasting forks and a clear set of instructions. A fun item to pull out for late-night snacking or movie marathons, the unit is highly functional if not terrifically stylish. It also beats a bonfire in your living room. All pieces should be washed by hand. --Emily Bedard
