Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Capresso 439.04 Elegance 8-Cup Digital Thermal Coffeemaker, Silver with Black AccentsCustomer Review: Like an English sportscar Summary: 4 Stars
Okay, so maybe comparing the coffee maker to an English sportscar is a bit melodramatic. But the point is that while this thing does have its problems, it does what it is supposed to do very well. I was convinced that there was no difference between the cheap coffee makers and more expensive models until my fiancee convinced me to get this model. Indeed, it makes exceptional coffee - comparable, at least, with professionally brewed joe. Thus, because there won't be any more trips to Starbucks, it'll pay for itself in a few months. Without a doubt, the best feature is the thermal carafe. There's no way to go back to the glass carafe versions with the heater on the bottom. This way, your coffee stays warm and fresh without scalding. Of course, it does have its mechanical problems. As one reviewer pointed out, the carafe gurgles incessently and loudly. I find this to be quite charming, however, as there's something - I don't know - vaguely "Parisian" about the sound of gurgling coffee. The parts, in general, are a bit flimsy and hard to clean. And, yes, if you don't have the carafe in all the way or don't have the cone inserted just so, you'll end up with eight cups of coffee spilled directly onto the countertop. If you think missing your morning coffee is a drag, try cleaning it up off the tile, instead. But one learns quickly to double check the thing before leaving it to brew. After a few mornings spent grumbling with a sponge in your hand, you learn your lesson quickly. As for the timer breaking or the thing popping open spontaneously, I can't speak to either of those problems, and I've used mine every day for two years. In short, maybe there are better coffee makers out there, but I haven't found one yet.
Description of Capresso 439.04 Elegance 8-Cup Digital Thermal Coffeemaker, Silver with Black AccentsBy brewing directly into a 40-ounce, insulated thermos carafe, this 900-watt drip coffeemaker keeps coffee hot for hours, eliminating the need for a warming plate, which can turn coffee bitter over time. The carafe's lid seals in place during brewing, locking in flavor and aroma, and there's an optional charcoal water-filter cartridge for reducing chlorine in tap water. All this adds up to great-tasting coffee from start to finish. Other features include a digital clock/timer that can be programmed 24 hours in advance to brew "wake-up" coffee, a swing-out filter basket, a permanent gold-tone coffee filter, a removable water tank, automatic shutoff after brewing, an automatic interrupter that halts coffee flow if you remove the carafe for a quick pour, and internal cord storage. The sleek coffeemaker measures 13-1/2 inches high by 7-1/2 inches wide by 12 inches deep. --Fred Brack
