Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Capresso 259.03 H2O Plus Glass Water Kettle, Polished ChromeCustomer Review: Attractive design but very unreliable. Summary: 2 Stars
This is a very attractively styled electric kettle. It boils water quickly and is relatively quiet. I did not experience the issue with the plastic taste/smell other reviews have mentioned.
Why only two stars you ask, the reliability. My first kettle stopped working after five months. The power switch was faulty. I returned it to customer service who send a replacement. The lid's hinge on the replacement unit broke after another three months. I'm not going to bother returning it this time. When you add up the cost of shipping and the inconvenience it's not worth it. This is unfortunate as it is otherwise a fast and good looking kettle at a reasonable price.
Customer Review: Almost two years old and still going strong Summary: 5 Stars
Have had this kettle for 1 yr 11 months and it is still going strong. We use it at least once a day, normally 2 or three times a day. The only problem we have had is the plastic "polished chrome" top came off the lid and had to glue it back on. In addition, the top doesn't look very polished anymore, more like a piece of silver plastic with water stains. I like that this kettle is fast, clear, simple/minimal in design, and the minimum amount of water you need is two cups. Also, it is just too cool to watch. Finally, we always use water from our reverse-osmosis filter system and have never had to worry about leaving water in it for a few days or any type of buildups.
Customer Review: Looks can be deceiving Summary: 1 Stars
I ordered this kettle specifically to avoid heating up water in plastic. However, this kettle emitted a foul chemical odor that also transferred to the water. I boiled it a few times plus tried the water/vinegar suggestion in the brochure but nothing seemed to help. I decided that I didn't want to take the risk of drinking these unknown chemicals so I'm returning it - it's not worth the risk. I can't figure out if it's coming from the "stainless steel" bulb (that feels like plastic to me if you tap on it) that covers the heating element or the plastic seal between the glass & the bulb. Plus the lid has a stong odor too & that is plastic covered in "stainless steel".
Customer Review: quit working after six months Summary: 1 Stars
I bought this mostly because I felt it looked attractive. Like some of the other reviewers mention, it does emit a foul odor (I think from the rubber ring around the heating element). Another other thing I don't like about this product are that although it looks like chrome, it isn't. Instead, a chrome-like thin wrap has been sealed to whatever is beneath it. After using the kettle a few times, the chrome-like wrap on the lid cracked/crinkled up, and it looks cheap. When it worked, it did boil water very quickly, however after about six months it quit boiling water, and now just heats it up a little. Despite its good looks, I deffinately do not recommend this product.
Customer Review: Works great - BUT be careful when cleaning it! Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this last January (of 2006) through Amazon, and it was used several times daily for well over a year without showing any signs of wear. Very durable and extremely fast at boiling water.
It died on me last week though when I decided to wipe off the base - it was getting a bit dirty from the kitchen counter. One small spot of water got into the exposed electronics in the base and it shorted out. I never submerged it obviously, but it appears to not enjoy cleaning of any kind. Silly me, to leave it plugged in when I was wiping it down. A damp rag was enough to kill it.
I'll buy a new one though, it was a workhorse.
