Customer Review: Beautiful product but cost-compromised by a 50-cent part.
Summary: 3 Stars
This kettle may be hard pressed to outperform the British electric kettle which functioned flawlessly through approximately 12,000 - 15,000 heating cycles over a twenty year span. On first use, the Capresso has performed well.
Sadly, a small component ---perhaps 50-cents out of the overall design/manufacturing cost--- earns it the bulk of the criticism that it has received in this review forum.
THE LID!! What a pity!
The stench of the lid:
Other reviewers have noted the intense plastic (plasticizers from the plastic?) smell from this kettle. As a previous astute reviewer has noted, the smell comes not from the silicone rubber seal that seals the heating dome in the base of the kettle, but from the molded plastic lid. Fortunately, only condensation from the boiling water comes in contact with the outgassing plastic component, rather than the boiling water itself. Presumably this reduces one's consumption of plasticizer if the kettle is used for boiling water for beverage preparation. I am keeping the kettle, though, because I also presume that the plastic's outgassing will diminish with time.
The flakey "open" catch for the lid:
Plastic softens, somewhat, with heat. Plastic can also deform and wear. After opening and closing the lid three or four times, when examining the kettle ---new, out of the box--- and using it to boil the first litre of water, the lid would not stay propped open. This would not be a problem except that the directions specifically state "IMPORTANT Open lid (A) at a 90-degree angle, when pouring all of the water at once into another container. This way hot steam will be diverted away from the hand holding the handle (D)." Since the lid flops down, by itself, the logical reaction of the user might be to grab the flopped lid and hold it open, using the other hand. RESULT: The hand that is holding the kettle handle is protected..... **AND** the first-degree steam burns are suffered by the hand that grabbed the flopped lid. I am keeping the kettle, though, because a simple "accessory" (omitted from the shipped product!!) serves to retain the lid in either intended position, open (for rapid pouring) or closed (for gently pouring into a tea cup or coffee filter): The accessory??? A #64 rubber band from the office supply store measuring 3.5" x .25" (the rubber band, not the store!)
I have no experience in plastics molding or manufacturing so it is just my conjecture that an operational (NOT nearly as stinky and quite functional) lid could have been designed into this product for another 50-cents in manufacturing cost.
This would be a "Five-Star" review if that extra 50-cents had been put into the design/manufacture in order to produce a product without the stench and dysfunction.
