Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Can Ram - Aluminum Can Crusher

Customer Review: Don't be fooled by the picture
Summary: 2 Stars

I purchased this product so that I would be able to crush my cans to make it easier to recyle them. After receiving the item I pulled it out of the box with a whole stack of cans near by just waiting to try the new gadget out. The directions for putting this together are more of an outline with pictures that don't really show much. After looking at the pivot pin and the handle, I figure it out and put it together. At this point I realize two things right off the bat. First: the crushing mechanizim will start off pushing down at an angle instead of straight on. Second: the picture shown both here on the site and on the box is mis-leading. The crusher starts in the handle-down position requiring you to lift the handle up to crush the cans. The difference between lifting up and pulling down makes this harder to operate, especially if you happen to have an impaired shoulder; you can't get the proper leverage to make it work easily.

I have not used this product enough to testify to the solidity of the handle, I have seen others saying that it breaks easily. Considering how easily the pivot pin is removed, that there's nothing to hold that pin in place once inserted, and the force needed to lift up on the handle to crush a single can- I can forsee the problem of handle breakage.

The only high point to this transaction was the seller; the item was shipped promptly, I had a tracking number to follow the progress, and it was delivered before the estimated arrival date.

Overall I am very disappointed in this product and it's many design flaws.

Customer Review: Almost solid, expect a year out of it
Summary: 2 Stars

This is a decent can crusher. We've been using it for about 1 year and crushed a lot of cans. If I had to estimate, maybe upwards 1,500 cans.

Even though it broke it was much better to work with than the single loading lever can crushers.

Advantages:

You can crush a lot of cans quickly. Get a partner loading cans as you crush, you can pound out 50 cans in less than 2 minutes.

Disadvantages:

If you are not careful, cans will get jammed. Doesn't happen that often if you fully crush each can but it does happen.

Over head bin construction is very weak and tends to allow cans to bounce out of place.

Fatigue will eventually cause the plastic to break. Ours finally gave in about a month ago where the pin holds the arm to the main base. The right loop broke right off and now our can crusher is essentially just plastic.

If the manufacturer reads these comments, I would suggest adding a metal band around the loops that hold the pin down to re-enforce the pressure the rings get when crushing cans. The pin was metal so it only makes sense that there is metal to reinforce the plastic it tries to contain. This way the plastic acts more like a bushing rather than the actual structure.

I would recommend this product to anyone who doesn't expect it to last for ever. I'm now in search for a similar product made all of steel that will last 3+ years.

Customer Review: Fast, efficient, high value can crusher
Summary: 4 Stars

I researched metal and composite plastic can crushers and wanted something that was more efficient than stomping cans with my feet. The single can crushers that crush cans vertically are usually cheaper or higher quality, but I decided I wanted something with an auto-feed type shute. The Dial Industries M92 Can Ram aluminum can crusher satisfies all of my needs.

Pros:
- Fast, efficient, shute-fed operation
- Large lever arm makes for easy crushing
- Cans drop at the bottom into a bucket or bag of your choice
- Easy to mount and assemble
- Strong, solid feel
- Cans crush to a very small profile
- Will crush a 16oz can if done singularly

Cons:
- Crushing mechanism starts off crushing at an angle
- Can can pop up if there aren't enough cans in the shute

If the can crusher worked 100% of the time, I would give it 5 stars, but the speed you get from being able to crush multiple cans is worth the occasional missed can, making it faster than any single crusher out there.

Overall, it works better than I suspected and I'm satisfied with it for the $20 I spent.

Customer Review: "Okay" Can crusher
Summary: 3 Stars

I just recieved my crusher in the mail. I put it together and was quite excited to use it. I installed it on a bare stud (no drywall) in the basement and was dissappointed to realize that the hopper relies on the support of a wall behind it and does not fasten to the crusher correctly if simply screwed to a stud. The hopper is still functional though. Also, I expected to pull down on the lever to crush cans but the crusher actually operates when you push the handle up. It's not really a problem. It just feels wierd. The only REAL problem with the crusher that I have found so far is that the slot that the crushed can drops through is too large and about 50% of the time, the can crushes a small amount and then slips through the slot diagonally. Bottom line: the thing works.....kinda. If I had it to do over, I probably would have purchased a different crusher.

Customer Review: Ok but not that great
Summary: 2 Stars

I bought this crusher to replace another one that had failed. I had hopes that this one would be more time efficent, etc. Needless to say that it did not last long. For me it did handle the full amount of cans with very minimal times of a can getting sideways and the only cans taht ever got sideways for me was if I was combining a small 6 oz can with the 12 oz cans. So I just did not combine the two sizes.

Sadly being plastic it was not long before the bin assembly began to always pop out of the little slots for them. Soon it was always needing to be pushed back behind the slots and part of the basket broke apart.

So for a short while it was great, but needed to be buidt wiser and stronger.
