Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Calphalon Nylon Pastry BrushCustomer Review: MINE BROKE AFTER TWO USES/WASHES Summary: 1 Stars
I only used it twice and the whole unit came out after the second wash. Basically a hunk of bristles are bound together with a hunk of glue then shoved into a slot about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. There it sits until it gets wet or slippery enough and comes out in one big hunk if tugged on at all. I was about to use it again to brush some melted butter on a loaf of bread and noticed a couple of bristles ready to come off (thats a whole other problem in itself). While pulling those off I decided to gently pull at the tips of the rest of bristles and see if anymore wanted to come out (so I didn't end up eating them later). Next thing I know, the whole unit of bristles come out into my hand. Needless to say I tossed it out after realizing I didnt want to attempt gluing it back together. I have only owned three pastry brushes in my cooking years but none seem to keep the bristles in the brush and off my food and this is the first one to actually come apart. I wouldn't recommend it. Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a good pastry brush that WILL NOT lose bristles?
Description of Calphalon Nylon Pastry BrushBaste with cooking juices, or butter, or egg washes, using this handy brush. A pastry brush is one of those tools for which there is no substitute. If you need to brush an egg wash over a pie crust, a knife or spatula won't do. This pastry brush from Calphalon features soft, pliable boar bristles that are firmly anchored into the sturdy black nylon handle--but still, be sure to fan the bristles before you use it to remove any stray strands. The handle has a small "rest," which keeps the brush elevated so the bristles stay clean and untainted--especially important if you're working with raw egg. Whatever kind of wash your recipe calls for, this brush will evenly paint your pastry or crust. It's also great for spreading marinades, glazes, or barbecue sauce on meat. --Dana Van Nest
