Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Calphalon LRS1805P Contemporary Stainless Special-Value 16-Inch Roaster with Nonstick Roasting RackCustomer Review: Excellent Product Summary: 5 Stars
I have found this roaster to be a very well-made and durable product. I really like the 'clad' type of stainless steel and wasn't in a position to spend two hundred plus for All-Clad or Viking. In my opinion, this one seems to be every bit as good. It is beautifully made. I love the vertical handles and find them to be an asset in a large pan such as this one. Handles that stick out horizontally can be more of a pain than anything, in my opinion, not only because they get in the way but they make the pan just too large for both storage and use.
I was not really interested in the nonstick rack, but I won't count that against the roaster. I was hoping to find the roaster without the rack, but that was an impossibility. I actually purchased the silicone rack that Veritas recommended and I like that rack very much, except that I had to make sure I didn't get a turkey larger than eighteen pounds, due to the limitations of the rack (I should have checked that out ahead of time). The roaster, however, will accommodate a much larger turkey.
I had no problem at all cleaning the roasting pan after making a turkey in it. I think that a good quality stainless pan is always worth it. Calphalon is a good brand. You can get a lifetime of use out of their products.
Customer Review: LOVE this roaster & rack Summary: 5 Stars
For years, I'd used cooking bags for turkeys and large roasts in my cheap, $10 roasting pan. Then I took a cooking class and learned how to make pan gravy from the drippings. Trouble is, you can't do that with a $10 pan. So I bit the bullet, did my homework, shopped for a great deal and bought this one for about $100. And we LOVE it! Rack is non-stick and is a breeze to clean. Pan is NOT non-stick, but deglazing it with wine when I make the pan gravy takes off all the major stuff and the rest comes clean with dish soap and a sponge. (I didn't want a non-stick pan, as I expect this thing to last forever, and non-stick surfaces wear out.) The only catch with this pan is it's big, so it holds and cooks a large turkey perfectly, but my mire poix tends to burn around the edges when cooking a chicken or a small roast. I ended up buying a second, smaller roasting pan similar to this, but the little one isn't nearly as nice as this one and it cost just as much. I wish Calphalon made a 9x13 size. But if you're looking for the perfect roasting pan for large items, this is the best!
Customer Review: costly, but worth every penny for a great turkey and gravy! Summary: 5 Stars
okay, I'm not a professional cook, but I want a good turkey dinner for my family. It is the focus of Thanksgiving. I read lots of articles and write ups about roasting pans and which type is best so I bought this roasting pan and cooked by butterball 20 lb turkey...and it was amazing!!! Best I have ever had. The meat was moist and wonderful throughout. Stuffed 20 lb turkey cooked evenly in 5 1/2 hrs. Lots of wonderful rich brown juice and drippings. Best gravy I HAVE EVER HAD. I can not describe how wonderful those turkey drippings were! Pan did great on the stove too when creating the gravy itself. Worth every penny for the pan. Plan to use for same for Christmas dinner and I will try roast lamb and some other roasts too now. Pan was heavier than I anticipated, but great quality. Hint: stab the bottom of the turkey in different areas to release more juices during the last few hours of cooking for more juice with the drippings.
Customer Review: This pan put the "thanks" in my Thanksgiving Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using an inexpensive (cheap, thin) roasting pan for many years. I finally decided to get a good one in time for Thanksgiving and after reading the reviews chose this one. I am so glad I did! This pan worked like a dream and has great looks to boot. Even in my old pan my turkeys have turned out well, but the gravy was another story. It's difficult to make a perfect gravy in a thin metal roasting pan. The drippings tend to burn quickly rather than brown. Thanks to this pan, my gravy was brown, delicious and a breeze to cook. It cleaned up nicely, although I did purchase some Bar Keepers Friend to get rid of a few small spots on the inside of the pan. I probably could have lived with them, but I want to keep it looking good and had some older stainless that needed a bit of attention anyway. I'm so thankful for this roasting pan and will be using it often.
Customer Review: I'm glad I didn't buy the All-Clad Summary: 5 Stars
I'm verrrrry happy with this pan. I did a ton of research and was pretty much set to buy the All-Clad roaster. However, my partner accompanied me to BB&B and wouldn't let me pull the trigger. Good thing I showed him that one first so the $129 blow was not as severe and we bought this one. I don't regret it one bit!!! Cooks Illustrated hasn't steered me wrong. It is somehow light and sturdy/strong at the same time. I roasted a 5-rib prime rib roast in this thing, first by searing the outside in the pan on two burners, and roasting it for 3+ hours. It came out impeccably and my pan sauce in this thing was to die for! I don't miss the All-Clad at all--in fact, after lifting the pan in the store, it felt like it already had a roast in it! Plus, I hear reports that it temporarily warps on the stovetop. You won't regret getting this pan. Happy Roasting!
