Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Calphalon JR8782-2P Contemporary Nonstick 2-1/2-Quart Shallow Saucepan with Lid

Customer Review: Phenomenally versatile, lasting durability
Summary: 5 Stars

If you're buying ONE pot or pan, make it this one. Here's why it's great:
(1)Even heating -- thick and conductive metal cooks everything gently with no hotspots, no burning of delicate sauces
(2)Flared sides allow you to cook both tiny and large portions, and even to use it as a saucier for reducing thin sauces.
(3)Extremely nonstick -- eggs, caramel, even stuff burned black came off with the wipe of a sponge
(4)Durable -- both the coating and the pot itself. For 3 years I've used and abused this, and there's no warping or scratching off of the coating. Metal utensils and all.
(5)Well-designed lid -- glass so you can see in, tight sealing for cooking rice, tempered so you can do everything but hammer it and it will last, handle for when it gets hot
(6)Stain resistance -- I've cooked dozens of curries in this pot, and there's not a hint of turmeric stain

This dish has been my workhorse since January 2007, and I couldn't ask for a finer one. If they offered stainless-clad versions so I didn't feel guilty using a metal whisk, I'd replace all my other pots and pans.

Update: I now own a good set of stainless-clad pans, and this baby is still the first one I reach for. It's particularly fantastic for pasta and rice, which leave hard-to-remove starch residue on stainless, and also for macaroni and cheese, which does the same thing but with solidified cheese sauce. It now needs a little oil in the bottom if you want to cook an egg on it.

ONE caveat: it has a 7" diameter base, so it works best with a larger burner/eye. Some deep 2-3 qt pots are sized for smaller (5.5" diameter) eyes. It's conductive enough that I've used it on my 5.5" eyes without problems, but it takes longer to heat.

Customer Review: It's become my new utility cookware
Summary: 5 Stars

Like a couple of other reviewers, I also bought this based on the America's Test Kitchen recommendation.

What else can I say other than I truly love this saucepan! Aside from my trusty cast-iron skillet, it's actually become my "go to" item in the kitchen now. Does a fantastic job with sauces and soups as well as stews and the non-stick makes picture perfect rice every time, especially with the very well-fitting lid. I am easily able to stuff a whole cut up small chicken with a couple of cups of rice in the thing with oodles of room to spare!

I'm not entirely sure about the comments about it being so heavy though... This thing is surprisingly light for it's looks which says a lot about the quality that went into its construction.

Even though it's a 2 1/2 quart sauce pot, it's pretty immense for it's size. I brushed off the previous comments about the size, but when I opened that box, I couldn't believe how big it really is. Not that it's a bad thing since I have a pretty large kitchen and range, but if you're struggling on space it may be hard to find a spot to store it.

Based on friends and family whom I am have cooked for, they wound up purchasing one and every single one of them love this pot to pieces. Such a shame the other "Contemporary Nonstick" models are so expensive, otherwise I would get them as well.

Customer Review: The perfect saucepan!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I normally don't write reviews but I had to look up this purchase a year later and made sure to give this 2 huge thumbs up!!!! As a chef this is my new favorite pan. I use it for everything! The construction is of high caliber material. It's heavy, the heating is even, firm handle, and the lid fits perfectly. The glass allows me to see when it's exactly done w/o opening the lid.

What makes this so great is the nonstick quality is the best I've seen in a long time. As long as you don't use abrasive cleaning or metal cooking utensils, the nonstick looks and perform like it was in mint condition. And on top of all this.... the cost is BARGAIN! I didn't realized how cheap this was until I pulled up my purchase. I would pay up to $99 for this pan because it's worth it. If you are new to cooking, a regular house mom, or a professional, you should really, really have this pan in your arsenal. I promise you, you won't be disappointed. If you have child in college, a sibling that loves to cook, or someone who doesn't own a decent kitchen cookware you should get them this pan! It's an affordable gift that keeps on gving. I own the entire All-Clad set but this pan still remains my favorite. And that set was valued at $800!!!!!

Customer Review: Beautiful!
Summary: 5 Stars

I forget how much I paid for this, but I want another one! It looks sweet! Especially boiling something with the lid on it. The handle on the lid doesn't get hot after 10 minutes of boiling, the pan handle is easy to grasp, and nothing sticks to this thing. Running water will clean out whatever it was that was cooking in it - no need to touch it with a cloth. The small details are what is most impressive about this - the heavy weight, the Calphalon logo on the very end of the handle, the "Made in Toledo, Ohio" stamp under the pan - it's the little things that one pays the Calphalon price for!
Some cons - I was expecting, with a lifetime warranty, that I would be able to throw this thing around and just send it back if it ever broke, right? Well, Calphalon gives you a long list of things you can't do to this - using non-stick cooking spray, metal utensils, put it in a dishwasher, stack them on top of eachother (what - stacking two pots on top of each other will void the warranty? Come on!), etc. After I bought my cookware set if feels like I have a newborn in the house.
But this is great quality Calphalon cookware at unbeatable prices at Amazon.com!

Customer Review: Very, very disappointed
Summary: 1 Stars

I own other Calphalon cookware and have found it to be of excellent quality. Unfortunately this saucepan does not fit into that category. Apparently Calphalon is no longer made in the United States but is now made in China. The quality of the product is NOT what it once was.

After receiving the saucepan I unpacked it and washed it. My major problem is with the lid of the pot. There is a rubber gasket between the glass cover and the metal rim. This gasket area filled with soapy water from being washed and I found it impossible to remove all of the liquid. This means that when cooking steam will condense there and oils from food will also collect there. This could then be transferred to other foods at subsequent cooking times. There is also a high probability that mold could form there during storage. This is unacceptable.

I have returned this saucepan to Amazon for a refund and will search for a product without this problem.

I am unable to recommend this product to anyone else and highly encourage you to check the lids of any pots you are considering for a similar issue.
