Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Calphalon D87821/2P Commercial Hard-Anodized 2-1/2-Quart Shallow Saucepan with LidCustomer Review: Very good buy Summary: 5 Stars
This is a heavy duty, professional quality saucepan. The body of the pan is constructed of thick anodized aluminum. This material conducts heat very well and the pan is thick enough that it retains heat. The surface of the pan is very smooth and feels like a blackboard, I don't have a hard time cleaning it unless I cook something very sticky like oatmeal. The handles are riveted on and constructed in a way that they don't get hot on the stovetop. I never have to use a potholder unless the pan has been in the oven. The lid is also made of anodized aluminum and it fits well on the top, though it is not very heavy and some steam can escape. The pan is wider and lower than similarly sized saucepans, making it more like a saute pan but still very much a saucepan. The wider surface on the bottom makes it easier to brown aromatics or meats when making a sauce, and it also makes it easier to reduce liquids. This is one of the highest quality pieces of cookware that I own. I use it very often for a wide variety of uses. I consider this item to be a very good value for the price (under twenty dollars), and I recommend it highly.
Customer Review: Another great Calphalon pot! Summary: 5 Stars
I used this Calphalon pot quite a lot, for an assortment of uses. Most often I use it for boiling pasta, making spaghetti sauce and making rice in. As with all the Calphalon pots and pans, this is a high quality pot made aluminum with a hard-anodized surface which makes it stick resistant (though it is NOT non-stick). Supposedly metal utensils will not harm the surface, but I always use Calphalon nylon utensils anyways - better safe than sorry!Because of the material its made of, you are not supposed to stick this pot in the dishwasher. I usually rinse it out, soak it in water for 20 minutes, then clean it with a soft sponge. I have heard of people having difficulties rubbing the anodized surface off when using rougher cleaning tools (scotch-brite, etc), so I try to use the softest materials when possible. One of the best features of Calphalon cookware is the lifetime warranty. I have never had to use it, but it's nice to know its there should any of my pots and pans go bad. One thing to keep in mind - putting these pots and pans in the dishwasher will void the warranty!
Customer Review: Pan is nice and round, and lid handle is quite ergonomic Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best pots to hit the market in recent memory. It is slightly reminiscent of the T-Fal 4U 2.8-Quart Covered Sauce Pan, but with more sensuous curves and a more rugged demeanor. I have found that the Calpholon out-performs the T-Fal on all counts when it comes to heating noodles and malt-o-meal.
The Calpholon also exhibits extaordinary aerodynamic performance. During heated arguments, the wife is able to
easily grasp the sleek handle, slide it off the hot stovetop and fling it across the kitchen toward my head in one smooth motion. The percussive timbre that is produced when the pan strikes the side of my head, or when my son bangs our Anolon 6-Piece Utensil Set on the lid are among the most glorious sounds imaginable.
The care and craftsmanship that are apparent in the adonized coating brings to mind the work of the ancient Afghani
gemstone carvers who produced the legendary Lapis Lazuli stones. Although the price here is a bargain, I would recommend checking the Sunday inserts for a deal on these.
Customer Review: Not as good as the "old" Commercial Hard Anodized... Summary: 2 Stars
I bought this saucepan to add another smallish saucepan to my other 13 pieces of Hard Anodized (original) and Commercial Hard Anodized cookware. I was disappointed with this pot. It is noticeable thinner than my other pots. Because of that, it doesn't work as well. The reason Calphalon is so great is because they are thick pots made of aluminum so they conduct heat extremely well and extremely evenly. This pot does not do that as well as the older "made in USA" pots. It's too thin.
My recommendation would be to buy the Calphalon ONE products as they are made of the thicker aluminum and do what Calphalon is supposed to do... cook evenly without any hot spots. Sadly, all the current CHA pots look like they are made in China and are thinner/cheaper than the older CHA products labeled (and looking) almost exactly the same.
Unfortunately, economic concerns ("we can get this made cheaper in China!!!") have struck down a formerly fantastic product line.
Regards,
Clark
Customer Review: Don't burn the macaroni Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this pot in January, and have used it several times a week since. I love the pot for sauces and other stove top applications, it has worked tremedously on my ceramic stove top (grrr hate the ceramic wish it was gas but that is a different review). The pot has been easy to clean and the finish has held up very well, and I looked forward to years of use until I boiled the pot dry with my macaroni noodles. The noodles seemed to have bonded in a blackened brotherhood to the bottom of the pot and no amount of soaking, scrubbing, cleaning can seem to coax them to separate again. Because this little incident had more to do with being the mother of a teething 8 month old and had very little to do with the pot, I will definatly be purchasing another pot.
Overall this is a great purchase at an unbelievable price, so for cooks hoping to take their dishes up a notch I would totally reccomend it just don't leave it on the stove with noodles and no water for over 30 minutes.
