Customer Review: A fantastic skillet set

I'm no pro chef. In fact, I'm just a medical student with a passion for cooking. That being said I don't have the luxury of breaking the bank for an All-Clad cookware set but I do appreciate kitchenware that gives good bang for the buck. The Calphalon Contemporary line falls right into that category.
This line is constructed with anodized-aluminum and combined with a non-stick coat. I picked these pans for that very reason - anodized-aluminum heats quickly and evenly while the non-stick surface allows for easy cleanup (important since I don't have a dishwasher). There are a ton of different materials and coats used in cookware each with their own pros and cons. I won't be talking about that here, but you should definitely do your homework to find cookware suited to your needs.
That being said - onto the pans. Let's start with design. The 10 and 12 inch skillets are very versatile sizes. Many sets throw an 8 and 10 inch pan at you, but I often find the 8 inch pan just a bit too small to be useful in anything but frying an egg. A 12 inch pan can be used for anything from searing tuna to steaming paella (I recommend getting lids if that is your goal). The construction of these pans is outstanding. Anodized-aluminum is lighter than steel and copper allowing for better maneuverability but the pans still hold a definite weight making them feel solid and durable. The handles aren't triple riveted but the double rivets feel more than sturdy enough here. The pans, with accented steel handles on top of the charcoal exterior, are elegant and beautiful. Not only do these look and feel great, they cook great. Both pans heat very quickly and very evenly. I've cooked a variety of dishes ranging from tofu to rib-eye and I found that my cooking times were significantly reduced and meats cooked nice and evenly over the entire surface. Best of all, these pans are inexpensive.

Bottom line: If you've done your homework and are set on anodized-aluminum non-stick, look no further. With its quality construction and inexpensive price tag, you definitely won't be disappointed with the Calphalon Contemporary series.
