Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 8-1/2-Quart Saucier with LidCustomer Review: Great Saucier for large families or big meals!! Summary: 5 Stars
My wife told me day that she was tired on her stainless steel pans not being short enough to fit in the oven. After seeing this pan pop up one day on a bargain hunters website I had to check it out. I did the research and found that these pans were really heavy duty so I bought it. Now, it is true that the footprint of this pan is quite large as far as diameter goes, but we have a large family and need to cook a lot to feed everyone. We have used the pan almost daily for the last 5 months. It still looks new and practically nothing sticks to it. And, you can even use a Brillo pad to scub it clean. Yes, it does help to have gas burners as the heat will spread more evenly with the flames.
I was a little concerned with the fact that it is made of aluminum which can be mildly toxic to humans, but the anodization process prevents much of the aluminum from being leached. Anodized aluminum is so tough and scratch proof you will wonder why they don't make auto bodies out of this stuff.
I highly recommend this saucier to anyone who cooks large meals and has a gas range. You will think you're a professional chef with this pan.
Customer Review: A WINNER!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have had a set of copper bottom Revere Wear since 1969!! While I have always liked my revere wear I was always frustrated with the stock pot, it takes forever to cook pasta and I found that because it is a tall and more narrow pot by the time sauces, soups, stews, chile, etc. got heated up they also got scorched, even with diligent stirring. I LOVE THIS Calphalon pot! Because the bottom is bigger, it does not take forever for foods to heat and get cooking, I made chile the other day, I left it to simmer for two hours went about doing other chores (with an occassional stir )and it was perfect. I have found the same to be true of my Calphalon 2 quart pot. I have also found it easier to cook with this pot because it is not tall like a stockpot, I am a short person , this pot is much more comfortbale to work with. It was a steal at $19.89 I had no problem as far as it fitting on the stove, yes it is bigger around, but I had other pots on the stove at the same time with no problems. I love having pasta cook so much faster in this pot. This is a great investment if you enjoy cooking!!
Customer Review: Wonderful! Calphalon does it again & again! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased (from Amazon) the Calphalon Commercial Hard-Anodized 8 1/2 qt. Saucier pan last Christmas as a gift to myself! It arrived prior to Christmas, so I used it to cook a beef roast on Christmas day. We were in temporary housing and even with having to cook the roast on the stovetop (oven not working), we couldn't have asked for better results. Then after our move, I roasted a hen in this pan in the oven; the hen was so moist and tender - my husband raved over it - the first time in 20 years that he's actually enjoyed a roasted hen. On top of that, the gravy made in this pan is the best - deglazing is so easy! This is a really large pan, but the heat distribution is so superb, there was not a bit of a problem even cooking on a small stove top burner. I LOVE Calphalon, and the Commercial Hard Anodized is my favorite line. Every few weeks I'm looking for another piece to add to my collection and replace my old stainless cookware. You just can't go wrong with cookware of this quality, and I know it will be passed down to my daughter becasue it just doesn't wear out. What a value!
Customer Review: Great Pan and ALL Calphalon is now made in China. Summary: 5 Stars
I have this pot and the identical one in Calphalon One infused anodized. Both are great and BOTH are made in China. That's correct, this one that's discounted, AND the $200+ Calphalon One version I also own that was purchased at Macy's. Before writing this, I went back to Macy's checked EVERY open stock Calphalon pan in the department. Without exception, every piece of Calphalon One (infused and nonstick) and also Calphalon's new mega-buck stainless cookware line is made in China.
That noted, Calphalon Anodized pans are still one of the very best pans for anyone cooking with higher output (6 x 17,500 btu burners) gas rangetops. This pan and it's Calphalon One twin are the absolute BEST pans I've found for searing large roasts because they have the mass necessary AND can take the intense heat needed to maintain adequate searing temperatures, searing an 18 pound rib roast to perfection.
I do have a set of Calphalon Commercial Hard Anodized I purchased at Williams-Sonoma about four years ago. Those were made in the USA, but it appears all their new stuff is made abroad...<sigh>
Customer Review: It's Great, But.... Summary: 4 Stars
I am not going to repeat what a lot of other people already said. It really is a very nice pot, cooks and cleans very well, BUT: you must realise that this is a very WIDE pot. I was not really prepared for quite how wide. I have a normal size, 4-burner stove - if anything, on the large side, not at all small. However, if I am using this pot I can NOT use the burner that is either in front of it or behind it. The pot is so wide that another pot wont fit with it. So if you think you'll be needing all 4 burners, this pot makes it a little difficult. Also, since it is so wide, when I put it away, it naturally goes on the very bottom of the pot stack under my sink. Which makes it kind of a pain to get out and put away each time. Other than this one issue, I like the pot very much. Cooks evenly, lid fits nicely, and goes into the oven without a problem. Nothing has ever burned in it for me so far (I've had it for more than 6 months). Washing in the sink is a little cumbersome because of the size, however. Luckily, it does not require a lot of scrubbing.
